How can copywriters set their rates effectively?

One of the biggest lessons I had to learn early on was that not everyone is the right fit as a client. If some prospective clients say your rates are out of their budget, it doesn't mean that you're pricing too high. It may just mean that their expectations are out of line with the realities of the industry. I learned a lot by talking to professionals in the construction industry. Although we perform different services, they approached things from the perspective that many prospective clients won't be a good fit because of budget constraints, so they have processes in place to filter out those that aren't the right fit (rather than dropping prices).

The rate you charge should purely depend on the ask and if it aligns with your expertise. If I charge 45$ per hour for regular social media and long-form copy doesn't mean I will charge the same for scriptwriting. At the same time, if the client seems like someone who wants multiple changes, I don't mind quoting $55/hr as well. Your time is your biggest asset!

Assess your expertise and skillset, as well as the specific problems you can solve for your clients. Keep in mind that the rate you charge for a local SME targeting the immediate neighborhood will significantly differ from what you'd charge for a multinational corporation whose copy will be read by millions. There are many strategies to set rates or prices. But the most significant is to see how you can transform your customer. Period. If you really do that, then you will be able to charge what you need. This is not a matter of money, this is a matter of how much value you can deliver. If you are new, deliver value. Do something free with a review/recommendation agreement. Then, ask for referrals. Do the same with 1 or 2 referrals. You will be able to start to charge per hour because you have now a support and evidence of a good job.

You can also research about how much are the companies paying for different jobs. A good way to go about this might be freelance platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, and so on. This will give you a rough idea about how much are other freelancers charging and how much are the clients willing to pay.

Adding to this, it is important to join copywriting communities and make friends with other top copywriters, so you can inquire from them how to go about rating.

Market research is crucial for pricing your services competitively. Look beyond just the 'going rate' for copywriters. Factor in your specialty areas and unique skills that may allow you to charge a premium. Utilize professional networks or freelancing websites to gauge current pricing trends. This information will help you set a rate that's not just competitive, but also reflective of the specific value you bring to clients.

A lot of copywriters and creatives say don't charge rates, charge per project. But, I don't have necessarily have a problem with rates on principle, especially if it's a good rate. A lot of copywriting work comes in short and irregular. A rate can make this easier to deal with (especially if you've worked with the client before). A rate can also work fine if you're working in a time block (like a half-day). Some also say don't charge per word. Again, I don't see a problem with this on principle. It's just hard to command a premium this way in today's market.

When it comes to charging, I charge based on which form of content, I am writing for each client. For short form copy, I will consider charging per word. For medium form copy, I will consider per hour. For long form and value giving content such as articles or long form marketing, I will consider value based rating. Again like earlier mentioned each has its pros and cons. But it is a qualitative medium of service fee for me.

Project-based is the charming chap who gives a clear picture from the get-go, but if you underestimate the task, you're in for a night of unpaid overwork. Retainer’s the loyal bloke, offering steady income and a chance to really get to know a client's brand. But, be wary, you could end up in a monogamous relationship with a client from hell. And don't even get me started about Value-Based. Every model has its pros and cons. Your pick depends on how you value your time, skill, and the kind of relationships you want with your clients.

Choosing the pricing model also depends on the medium you are writing for. For e.g., having a per-word rate will work for Word documents like project texts, press releases, etc., but will not work for a landing/web page. For web copies, set the price per page or based on the value your content is bringing to the client. A web page copy must always be priced higher than a press release because the landing page will continue to provide conversions if the copy is effective, but the press release will be used only a few times. So, knowing the purpose behind the copy will help determine the price.

Choosing a pricing model is a strategic decision. Hourly rates are straightforward but may cap your earnings. Per-word rates might undervalue complex tasks. Project-based fees are often fair but can be tough to scope accurately. Value-based pricing focuses on outcomes but requires a clear way to measure impact. Assess each model carefully to find what aligns best with how you want to deliver value. Consider your client's comfort level with each model too, as this can influence long-term relationships.

When a potential client asks your rate, use these simple words: "My standard rate is [x dollars] per hour." By having a STANDARD rate, you seem more professional and establish a baseline number around which to negotiate. To bring up rates yourself, say: "So what kind of budget did you have in mind for this project?" This shifts the responsibility to them. If they give a low number a) consider walking away or b) ask for something else in return (such as a testimonial) by using the script above: "Well, my standard rate is [x dollars] per hour, but I can do it at the rate you suggested if, provided you love my work, you leave me a LinkedIn testimonial."

The need for rates to be communicated clearly, can never be overemphasized. When a project goes well and payment compromised it always causes dispute among the freelancer and the client. It is advisable to have a standard rate depending on the form of content. And relating it to your client from the start.

A skillful way to do this would be to not only communicate what you'll be taking (charges) from them but also what you'll be giving them. The latter is what your client is more interested in, if you convince them about this bit, then the former will sort itself out.

No one likes a foggy price tag. Here’s a quick guide to not scaring off clients when the numbers roll out. Know Your Worth Your skills didn’t fall from the sky; they’re honed with sweat and tears. Price 'em right. Clear Communication Be as clear as a summer’s day. “For this bundle of wordsmithery, you’ll part with a tidy sum of X.” Break it Down Offer a glimpse behind the curtain – where’s the value coming from? Is it your time, expertise, or the promise of eyeballs glued to the page? Flexibility’s Your Friend Got a sliding scale or package deals? Flaunt 'em. Show, Don’t Tell Parade out those gleaming testimonials! Remember, confidence is key. If you can convince them you’re the bee’s knees, they’ll cough up the dough!

Some copywriters just set their rates and then slide 'em right in to a bottom drawer to gather dust. Don't do this. Instead, open your bloody calendar and set a date—probably best around tax time—and on every year that date shows up... FOREVER. On that day you'll do nothing but look at your rates. Did you grow over the year? Do some kick-arse projects? Work with some top-flight clients? Get some stellar client testimonials? THEN PUT YOUR GODDAMN RATES UP. Even just the effect of a 5-10% addition to your current rates increases the health and wellbeing of your business... but even more importantly—YOU.

I will add always take feedback both positive and negative as a means to become a better copywriter by analyzing each feedback and implementing changes where necessary. Their is strength in learning from your failures and weakness, never forget that. Always critically analyze your opportunities and threats you do not want to miss them. Feedbacks are your testimonials as a writer, get them!!

Think of it this way: In a traditional 9-5, you typically receive raises and/or promotions as time goes by because you've grown in your abilities and become more of an expert. So, why wouldn't you do the same for yourself when you're charging as a freelancer or owner of a content marketing/copywriting agency? Reassess your rates often - at least yearly! - and increase accordingly. If you leveled up your ad copy skills, bump up those rates. If you feel you didn't do the same for email sequence copywriting, then you can leave that rate alone. Seriously, don't charge the same rates in 2024 that you set back in 2015.

Increasing your rates also means you can invest in courses to increase your competency and tools to streamline your writing process. Your rate should always align with your skills and the value you provide.

The #1 factor that influences the pricing you can CONSISTENTLY charge is the level of demand for your work. Most copywriters think that means their skills and experience, but that’s only a small part of this equation. The much bigger part is how much you’re doing to promote and pitch your services. If 5 people are interested in working with you each month, what you can charge is gonna be limited to the random budgets of those 5 people. If 30 people are interested in working with you each month, you can pick the 5 with the largest budgets.

Figuring out what to charge as a freelance copywriter isn't just pulling a number out of thin air :)) It's a mix of understanding your worth and meeting the market's pulse. Here's what I've learned to focus on: - Cost of Doing Business: Understand your overheads, including tools, software, and subscriptions. Ensure your rates cover these expenses to maintain profitability. - Specialization and Niche: If you have expertise in a specific area, such as tech or medical writing, you can command higher rates due to your specialized knowledge. - Value-Added Services: Consider offering complementary services, like SEO optimization or CMS uploading, either included or as add-ons, to differentiate yourself and potentially justify higher rates.

The 1 thing that has helped me charge better is networking. I've got most of my clients through referrals. There's an in-built trust when your contact is passed on in the network. It doesn't take extra effort to convince the prospect that you know your job. They know you can do it, and it only takes one call to get the ball rolling. I have never faced any objections to my price while dealing with clients through referrals. But the ones I pitch through cold emails are a bit harder to convince. How and where you find your clients really impacts your prices:)

My real-life experience: Remember to get the deposit before starting the project. Remember that in the market, there are various people here. Sometimes, the client will take forever to pay the bill, so at least when it happens, your loss will be part of the entire amount. Also, the deposit is a type of filtering for the client; those willing to commit the deposit will have a high chance of being clients that are easy to communicate with (still not 100%, as I mentioned, human is varied).
