1 Choose the right file format

Not all CAD file formats are compatible with 3D printing. Some are too complex, some are too simple, and some are proprietary. The most common and widely accepted file format for 3D printing is STL (stereolithography), which represents your model as a mesh of triangles. STL files are easy to export, edit, and slice for 3D printing. However, they also have some limitations, such as lack of color, texture, and metadata information. If you need more details and features for your 3D printed object, you can use other file formats, such as OBJ, AMF, or 3MF. These formats can store more data, such as color, material, and orientation, but they may also require more processing and software compatibility.

2 Reduce the file size

Large CAD files can take a long time to upload, slice, and print, and can also cause errors, crashes, and poor quality prints. To reduce the file size, you can simplify the model by removing unnecessary details, features, and geometries that are not visible or relevant for the final print. Additionally, you can reduce the number of polygons in your mesh with decimation or remeshing tools; however, be sure not to lose too much detail or accuracy. Lastly, compressing the file with a zip or rar program will reduce the file size without affecting the quality or format of your model.

3 Check the model integrity

Before you print your CAD file, you need to make sure that it is error-free and printable. Common errors that can affect your 3D printing include non-manifold geometry, inverted normals, and intersecting or overlapping geometry. Non-manifold geometry refers to edges or faces that are shared by more than two other faces, creating holes or gaps in your mesh. Inverted normals refer to faces of your model facing the wrong direction, creating an inside-out effect. Intersecting or overlapping geometry means some of the parts of your model are crossing or overlapping each other, causing unwanted holes, gaps, or extra material in your print. To fix these errors, you can use various CAD software or online tools that can analyze, repair, and optimize your model for 3D printing.

For instance, you should make sure that the model fits within the available space, is compatible with the material, and is oriented and scaled in a way that enhances its appearance, strength, and performance. Additionally, consider how rotating your model can avoid overhangs, bridges, or supports, or how scaling your model can account for tolerances, clearances, or fit.
