There is some value in this latter one, but most of the meat regards the link between people and the software form. When my wife and I wrote the book "Lean Architecture" we consciously discarded the term "Agile Architecture." If one were to consider an agile architecture, one might just look at the principles of object-oriented programming. Objects are software constructs that reflect elements of end-user mental models, and OOP is a way to create interacting networks of objects that together solve a problem in a way that is an extension of the end-user mind.

For example following TDD we first generate enough unit tests and then write enough code to satisfy unit tests. We add unit tests and code until the requirement is satisfied. Agile is a set of values and principles we follow to deliver working software, in small chunks. So Architecture should be defined just enough to deliver the chunks on a roadmap.

In essence, they are microarchitectures designed to adorn programs in abstract data type (ADT) languages to compensate for the lack of built-in object-oriented semantics. Therefore, design patterns are used in languages like C++ and Smalltalk to give programs some of the messaging, independence, actor-like encapsulation and MOP facilities of a true OOP language.

There is no evidence I know of that Design Patterns reduce risk. In fact, if defect rate is a function of code size, then it might work the other way. Design patterns rarely make code tighter: they rather add to code mass. Most of the GoF (Gang of Four) patterns involve pointers — the GOTOs of data — that often relate to program bugs.

Design patterns, especially trying to implement them in mechanical way is one of the biggest enemies for teams wishing to achieve great design. On the other hamd, they might be useful for an absolute beginner to try to recognize them in a great design and encourage the beginnets to talk about them even giving them some inaccurate vocabulary. If you hear senior architects still trying to use that inaccurate vocabulary, you should start to consider whether they are eligible or not for being. a great architect. No pattern stamds alone.
