The most straight forward answer is to actively intensively and without fear chase the various opportunities that will appear in front of you during your studies, your summer vacations, your neighborhood gathering, your travels. Start small , why that café is working, why the block of flats has a great community, why that shop is thriving and why not. Learn the unit inside out. Understand them both financially, politically, historically as well as in terms of spatial planning. A dear friend from planning school documented the careers of nearly 40 years of graduates from the University of Oklahoma. Most of us did not follow a linear progression, but rather followed our own interests and skill sets. A few graduated and stayed in the public sector, but many had become developers, flood control managers, a director at West Point, etc. so planning school gives us a generalist perspective and then we work until we find our calling. It is a launch point not a destination.

Now which one(s) among them you see yourself becoming a Master of, is a combination of your interest, skill sets, global and industry trends and sometimes even lucky accidents. Though I started as an Architect, Urban Planning gave me the opportunity to delve deeper into Public policy and urban transport strategy and opened up new avenues in both public and private sectors. The world, for good or bad, shifts to a new trend almost every decade and Urban Planning gives you the flexibility to upgrade and switch, without worrying much about your base qualification. Just keep your eyes and ears open and be willing to keep up with the changing world.

As we say, Urban Planning is a vast domain and there are multiple aspects and prospects. When we are in a Government organization, we need to be handling projects from various sectors and genres. It could be River Protection and Development, Solid Waste Management, Public Transportation, Environment improvement and Climate Resiliency, Social Development, Financial models, Bid Process Management etc. Specialising in one or two sectors is important and beneficial. However, we should also be ready to handle such diverse subjects.

Planning Education makes you learn and understand the principles involved in planning of human settlements whereas practice makes to learn the application of those principles on ground. Since cities remain different and distinct, they have to be viewed, understood and treated differently and distinctly. Learning principles is important but application of those principles remains critical, important and vital. I think education will have relevance only when one walks and talks with the city, its streets, people, community, spaces, flora, fauna and assess the challenges faced by people and community. Town planning education will have relevance only when we actually learning the validity of the principles we learnt.
