I always thought that I was a great listener, until I twice attended a program titled "Compassionate Listening." Listening really requires focus and energy - nodding vigorously and saying, "I hear you" are not parts of recipe. Leaving a conversation comprehending someone's values, feelings, and the details of their feedback provides the critical qualitative data to move forward with the stakeholder and make changes if necessary.

Something I learned from a great leader I had, and that I have found incredibly beneficial over the years, is to try and put yourselves in a parents shoes. This is particularly helpful when dealing with parents who have negative feedback, are complaining or maybe are the parent of a student you are having great difficulty with. Whether its true or not, going in to a conversation with the assumption of 'they are probably struggling/finding this even harder than I am' (especially relevant for behavioural difficulties) can reshape your demeanour and emotional stability when having tricky conversations. Even better is to get to the point that you believe, and can say, this must be so hard for you, how can we move forward together.
