Here's how you can utilize body language for a successful public speaking career.

For good posture, the focus should NOT be with standing tall and keeping your shoulders. The reason why is that for most people, they end up taking too much tension into the chest which disconnects them from breathing in their belly. As a result of doing chest breathing instead, it makes the voice sound more forced and raises the pitch (which can be irritating to listen to). Instead, it crucial to learn how to release tension in the body, especially around the shoulders, neck and chest as well as learn how to get grounded in your body. When you are relaxed and breathing correctly, it aligns your posture naturally while allowing the voice to sound naturally vibrant.

When I enter the stage, I like to go in the middle of it, anchored, facing the audience, looking at it in multiple angles while smiling, and start speaking after being silent few seconds. Since I am very tall (2 meters), this power entrance expresses confidence and helps me to grab instant attention.

Although it may seem simple, make sure you smile frequently throughout your presentation. It will help accentuate your positive body gestures. Also, show the audience your heads (the palms) early and often. There have been numerous studies that prove the positive effect of this on the audience.

Before you can block yourself on a speech you must always be able to answer the question “why am I moving here?” Some examples of motivated movement: -To get closer to the audience or and audience member. -To emphasize a particular talking point. -To reference a visual aid. -To demonstrate something physically. -To “act out” an anecdote or analogy.

Be deliberate in your moves. Being anchored to delivered a specific point gives your message some strength in the mind of your audience. Going back and forth on the stage should has well being deliberate. For exampIe, I do it when I want to question the audience or when I am doing one of my signature experiment.

Eye scanning your audience. Eye contact is the easiest way to create intimacy with an audience. Look directly at those in the room. Especially in a large space, this one technique makes the room feel small . If able, come into the audience and make contact with various people in room. Touch their shoulder or initiate high fives. People want to feel seen and heard.

Body language will win you half the battle. Exude an aura of confidence. Use the podium judiciously. Do not hide behind it. Have a straight posture. Do not slouch, lean against the podium or stand on one leg. Use the entire stage to move around, when required. Don't indulge in too many gestures by hands. Gestures should be relevant. Have a smile on your face at all times. Maintain eye contact with the audience at all times. Breaking eye contact and looking at the script or visual aids should be only a fleeting glance, when absolutely necessary.
