I have found Lean Six Sigma methodology to be very helpful in optimizing processes either by improving the process steps or by introducing new design. For existing processes the approach used is termed as DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control) and for new design the approach used is called DMADV (Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, Verify). There are several tools used in each of the two approaches and if used in the best way can give you most optimum processes and designs. Try it and you will not be disappointed ??
