A clearer basics can help you analyze with perfection which is very important for your project to continue. In my field of pharmaceutical translational science project, I do need to understand the basics of methods like flow cytometry, single cell sequencing, to understand the biology of a project as that is the base on which the project will dive deep into the further questions that we may have.
