Volunteeer!!! When our library has a Job Help Center I recruited people from networks of employed folks to help others find jobs. The results: the people who helped others by stretching their job hunting skills were never out of work long.

My exceptional discovery skills in empathy and strong communication have been instrumental in my advocacy work on behalf of individuals wrongfully sentenced to death. Through my experiences, I have learned that by listening attentively to the stories of those behind bars claiming innocence, and conducting thorough investigations, there is a real possibility of securing their freedom. Listening and effective communication are the keys that unlock creativity and lead to innovative solutions with empathy. What leads to empathy is your actions after you have listened to the story

A layoff can bring feelings of anxiety and uncertainty. However, your drive to succeed can be a powerful motivator during this time. I often find comfort in Maya Angelou's words, "Every storm runs out of rain." With this in mind, remember to leverage the skills that have brought you success so far. Layoffs often result from workforce reductions and the principle of "last in, first out." Instead of seeing it as a setback, view it as a stepping stone toward your next opportunity for success.”

I'm using my layoff as a springboard to explore new career paths in Community Outreach. By networking with industry professionals, volunteering to gain hands-on experience, and taking courses to build relevant skills, I'm opening doors to fulfilling roles where I can make a tangible impact in communities.

Networking opens the door to collaboration; strengthening partnerships and increasing the desired impact we want to create in our communities. Developing talent opportunities as well as mentoring opportunities. We treasure our partnerships.

Build real relationships. Networking is great for initial outreach, but being targeted in who you connect to, why, and with what intention is critical to building an intentional network. When you are intentional with each outreach, you have the ability to create and build a thriving ecosystem of connections that are aligned with your values and vision.

Network daily always noting the more advice and ideas the better you gain a broader perspective which leads to multiple plans and alternatives. DK

During this downtime, you can take it upon yourself to learn whether you plan to stay on the same career path or something new. Have there been changes in your current industry that you can learn about to give you an edge? Is there a transferrable skill that you can take some continuing education classes on to help make you stand out? Or maybe you want to try something new. Regardless of your motivation, adding to your credentials will only help you land your desired role.

Certifications go further than degrees in most of these situations. One of the most undervalued assets at a local college is the opportunity to network as well. They usually have career services offices and have lots of connections throughout the community. Don't just go to classes and get the piece of paper your certification is printed on, you get out what you put in. Everyone is using chat GPT so learn it, use it, but don't lose the value from the class taking short cuts.

After being laid off, it's crucial for individuals to focus on upskilling and staying updated in their desired field. This could involve enrolling in online courses or workshops related to their industry, attending relevant webinars or conferences, and joining professional networking groups. Additionally, engaging in self-study through books, podcasts, or industry-specific forums can provide valuable insights and keep one abreast of the latest trends and technologies.

Especially when trying to process a difficult work situation, including a layoff, part of the goal is to develop positive momentum. Working on and completing a certificate or personal development program can begin to rebuild our self-confidence and the momentum we need to successfully pursue our next opportunity. Allow yourself to be bolstered by not just the completion of the program, but feedback from instructors, classmates, etc. This will set you up for success when it comes to preparing for your job search and interview process.

When I was laid off several years ago I participated as a leader in a community violence prevention project. I invited members of my family to activities, got to know my neighbors, facilitated parent cafes, organized workshops on violence, and sure enough there's a picture of me somewhere holding a sign making an impact. Layoff can bring many woes, working on creating an impact filled my cup.

Reach out to your local community development corporation or United Way office. These are good places to find out if there are community-led project opportunities. Some even have community leadership training programs, for free, that are project-based. You'd be suprised at how hard it can be to find folks to particpate in these grant-funded programs.

You want to make sure that your resume highlights the skills that are transferable from one job field to another. This is the opportunity to catapult yourself into a new beginning.

Keeping your resume up to date helps you to market your skills at the appropriate time to land your ideal position. Your resume is your ID to get that first interview and if it’s not properly done and up to date you will never get the opportunity to share with that company who you are and what you’re capable of doing. Very vital to stay on top of your career portfolio with your resume.

I would say to keep your resume updated, and active, as a common practice. It means you are always ready to jump back on the job search horse in the event of a sudden job loss, or if you've just finally had all you can stand in your current job. It makes it easier to tailor your resume for positions younapplynfor without having to update and delete job experiences.

Being laid off unexpectedly can be tough, but it can also be a catalyst for growth. I know from experience. After being laid off, I leveraged the opportunity to scale my side hustle into a full-fledged business. If you're facing a similar situation, I encourage you to use this time to turn your ideas into action. Dust off that startup idea you've been dreaming about or take your side hustle to the next level. Remember, every setback is an opportunity to pivot and propel yourself forward. What I did when I was laid off from an accounting job in a nonprofit was get a job that was PT and got me out of the house while I was looking for full time work. As a finance / HR / Admin person that was teleworking or not front facing almost my career I felt a bit closed off from people. I also had a stretch during Covid that I was out of work and knew how frustrated I was looking for work so I knew I would be frustrated in no time. So I took a PT serving beer at a local brewery. I loved the brewery scene but I also got to socialize with coworkers and customers. Plus it got me out of the house. I made enough that I didn’t have to rely on unemployment so it gave me worth.

Most of the advice here is broadly applicable to making a career transition after a layoff, whether that's in community outreach or another field. So even if you decide that community outreach doesn't appeal to you, you might still benefit from these tips!

Firstly, when they say to you “it isn’t personal; it’s business” please remember that to them you are simply “human capital” so of course it isn’t personal to them. But it will feel like it is because it is to you! Totally reasonable! Secondly, do not simply spend all your waking hours on LinkedIn or job searching. Take advantage of some space in your life to consider what will make you happy. Finally, absolutely volunteer. I volunteered one congressional campaign & ended up w/job in district office leading to so many amazing places & where I am now! Seems cliche to say “my layoff was best thing to happen to me” but it was. I hope you can look back and feel that way too!
