Isolating is easy. Where did the machine stop, what was it trying to do. or did it lose communication. maybe it lost control power to a sensor or maybe lost power. check all sources and isolate it from there. Machine Power(480v), Control power(120v or 24v, 10v, 4-20MA), Communication(ethernet, wifi,Profinet,etc), interlocks(machine to machine, downstream equip, upstream equip).

Saving time on the process and determining the cause is all about integrity. The effort put into your individual machine and or processes. That is all what you are responsible for doing. So the more you put care into it the easier to pinpoint the issues

Always start with the last action performed and work backwards but don’t overthink it and send yourself on paths unrelated. KISS rule: “keep it simple stupid”

I have found that it is best to work and troubleshoot in pairs if at all possible. Having an extra set of hands, another set of eyes, and another brain to bounce ideas off of is the best practice. Knowing your own limits as a technician is also essential. I would rather someone admit they don't know over getting in above their level and creating a bigger issue. The worst thing I can hear after an hour of working on an issue taken over from another technician is the operator saying "oh, that's the original problem!".

Most of the time is an issue that is reoccurring, or a simple fix once it's isolated and broken down. It's a sensor that went out or a switching device. something that is used the most or a device that is constantly changing states. everything has an operating life and will fail at some point. Most of the time. I see this all the time where a Tech will always want to change out a PLC when it's a safety device such as door safety switch not allowing the control power to switch on to the PLC. they Immediately want to change out the most expensive device and the longest to change out. remember down time is profit loss.

Best practices is a good way to go about repairing and correcting the problems. As well as having a good partner to assist and discuss different ideas to proceed in repairing the problem without possible making the corrections actually longer. Bottom line is the machine has to run to make production goals. I believe it all starts with integrity.

This is where you can expand your thought process a little bit to help the preventative side of your maintenance. Look at the outcome of the problem and determine if there is an “almost failure” situation upstream causing the weakest link to fail. A good regimented maintenance program will help mitigate those “instigating” issues.

One thing that I've found helpful during troubleshooting is understanding the Operating Philosophy. It's like blue print of the plant operations itself. With the knowledge of understanding the purpose of plant design and how the process working, will be much easier to do the root cause analysis which is one of the key of performing troubleshooting.

Being able to read and understand schematics gives you an edge when it comes to diagnosing and troubleshooting. Safety first. You matter the most.
