In my experience someone doesn’t just become an executive coach from an internship so depending on the specifics of the full time work available, I’d always recommend the intern take on an in depth coach training themselves and seek certification alongside of their practical experience.

During my coaching internship, I made it a point to exceed expectations by taking on additional responsibilities and proactively offering solutions to client challenges. I sought feedback regularly to refine my approach and showcased my growth through measurable results, such as improved client satisfaction and successful coaching outcomes. Building strong relationships with key stakeholders and demonstrating a commitment to the company’s mission further positioned me as a valuable asset.

I've never come across internship opportunities for executive coaches as the profession usually attracts people with many years of management experience who then choose to specialise in coaching. I was fortunate enough to complete a coaching professional apprenticeship over 15 months alongside my role as a commercial director in a large media company. Coaching supervision is an expected part of the EMCC accreditation process and rightly so. It's important to keep up with this on a regular basis so you can become aware of any bad coaching habits that might start creeping in, and also learn alternative perspectives on how to navigate certain challenges and ethical dilemmas within a coaching context.

To turn connections into meaningful relationships, focus on genuine interactions. When you meet someone, follow up with a thoughtful message highlighting key points from your conversation. It's important to have credibility as an executive coach, and one of the best ways to do this is through accreditation with the EMCC, ICF or ACC. Many coaching courses will have a fast-track programme which makes the accreditation process a bit easier and it's therefore important to research whether your course is aligned with one of the 3 main coaching bodies I've mentioned before spending money on training.

When you act like an executive coach, you are likely acting out or copying your personal coach, group coach or mentor and before long it becomes second nature and people will recognize the burming desire in you to truly become a coach. Be the example you seek. 2. Know your stuff. Nothing is as embarrassing as being deficient in your supposed area of expertise. Keep developing yourself. Keep reading. Keep coaching. Reach out for help and join an executive coaching club. When you hang around the masters, you become a master.
