In my experience, there are no basics, every thing is a foundation in animation, skipping one will make your animation lame. But you can start with understanding 2D or 3D space axis, vertices, faces or length and width. Understanding keyframes or layers is another basic to learn. Framing is important in animation. Understanding lighting and shadow, colour theory, little physics etc are also fundamental.
