Package your services into "products" as much as possible, and if you can, create tiers of offerings - small/medium/large - with a specific set of outcomes for a client. The best case scenario is to create a subscription-based offering. This will create more predictability in your business and allow you to improve margins if/when you are consistent in your delivery and can eventually find lower cost ways to deliver the same value.

maintaining strong client relations is crucial in the consulting business. Positive relationships foster trust and loyalty, which are essential for repeat business and referrals. By understanding and addressing client needs, you demonstrate reliability and value, encouraging long-term partnerships. Good client relations also facilitate open communication, making it easier to navigate challenges and manage expectations. Apart from all the client engagements, I strongly believe in dedicating specific time slots for continuous learning. This is very crucial when you are working on your own since peer learning and feedback would be limited. I have identified 3-4 areas that are crucial for my success as a performance management consultant and have scheduled 3 X 45 minute slots every week to pursue further reading and reflections. I start this process by clearly defining my learning objectives for these specific topics because in the past I have spent a lot of time 'browsing' aimlessly on various topics I found 'interesting' - but without much success or measurable results that benefitted me.

Don't be satisfied with that fixed salary, credited into your account every month. Think it to be stipend that you are getting for learning new skills. To be your own boss, you have to market your own brand, which is "your name" itself. Clients should know "you" more than the organisation you are working you. Sooner or later, you will find your way to be your own boss.

As vast as is the consulting industry, please make sure to have a "Stop Doing List". In other words, as your own boss, identify tasks that drains your energy or distract you from undertaking high leverage activities and try and eliminate them. This will help one gain focus and increase productivity and will ensure, only high value services are rendered to the Client

Another key learning point is to schedule breaks and downtime as a part of your routine. Most of the time when we work on our own, we do not plan for breaks and tend to 'break' when we are really tired. My experience is that this is not efficient for recovery. Instead I plan my breaks at a specific schedule (15 minutes for every 45 minutes of concentrated work - inspired by pomodoro technique). This method has increased my productivity and has given me stamina to continue work for longer duration as well.

In order to thrive as your own boss , I believe one should have resilience, perseverance, patience , immense confidence , good communication skills and excellent problem solving skills. Honestly, these all traits can be acquired gradually.

To thrive as own boss in any industry , one needs to know consistency, perseverance and hard work is the key. There will be ups and downs in the journey but getting up after every fall is the key.
