First things first, check-in! It is important to check-in with the person you’re wanting to connect with. Humanize the convo versus making it transactional. Ask how their doing, if they’ve started a new role ask them how it’s going. From there make a connection between the networks they are tapped into and what types of speaking engagements interest you. For example, “I noticed that you post a lot on LinkedIn about diversity in tech. I’ve been looking to participate in more speaking engagements about the same topic. Have you come across any platforms or organizations looking for speakers?”

In some instances, these groups may not have the resources to pay your full speaking rate or might offer a form of in-kind compensation, but I would still encourage you to consider working with these groups. Here's why. While the group itself might not have the financial means to compensate you, there's a very good chance one of the attendees could connect you with a great speaking gig or become a paying client for your expert services. Not to mention the fact that it could lead to even bigger opportunities in the future.

I’m currently in the process of expanding my circle. We often get comfortable in the environment were in, which is great! However, being comfortable and being complacent are two different things. Utilize your network to branch into something new, interesting, and fun for yourself. Not only, may you expand your circle, you may also expand your comfort!
