Here's how you can tailor your public speaking style for diverse audiences as a project manager.

The first step before addressing an audience is knowing your audience, there is always 1 common interest of all individuals/group whom you are addressing. Put yourself in their shoes and visualise what they are expecting from you and what fruitful you can deliver. One way of knowing your audience is talking to the senior management or getting a form filled.

It's not enough to know your audience through the perspective of data. To effectively communicate with different audiences you need to know what your audiences wants and needs to get out of your talk. In smaller groups, I will often open my talk by stating the subject we will cover and then asking the audience what they want to make sure they know about the topic before we leave the room. In larger or more formal groups, you can coordinate beforehand with the person who booked you on what the group most needs to get from your speech.

I have an interesting cross-section of people whom I interact with daily. For those who know me, I'm the one who speaks, and people tend to listen. The reason that people enjoy hearing me speak is that I bring something new to the table every time. However, I carefully grade my audience by listening to them first to see what they will engage with and respond to. The give-in-take is the most important aspect of communication in my opinion. You must always access where your audience's attention is during your delivery. You do this by asking questions and making them feel at ease whatever their reply may be. The most important thing is to let them know you value their input. Seeing things from their perspective is the secret.

After knowing your audience, set your goals/objectives of delivering a presentation. It helps in alignment of thoughts, yours and the audience's.

1-Be yourself: As a speaker it's your identity what makes the difference more than your content. Showcase your values, style, and mindset to make an impactful connection with any audience you talk to. 2-Know the purpose: Knowing the outcome you want to achieve from your presentation will help you focus on what to say, what not to say, and to say it efficiently 3-Study your manager: knowing the communication style of your manager will help you to use the right content as approach him through storytelling or bullet point facts, use sense of humor or rough attitude, etc 4-Tailored content: Balance between time & content to avoid long speeches, provide numbers or statistics, And explain the impact of what you are saying to the job as a whole

If you give an example first, then a story and just one liner relevant to the topic or what the whole story/presentation was about, it will not be worth the time. Structure should be in such a way that the audience knows what you are talking about. Don't forget to conclude in the end.

Sharing personal experiences or anecdotes that the audience can relate to, leaves a lasting impact on the audience. For instance, when discussing a successful project, you might recount a moment of challenge and how the team overcame it, highlighting perseverance and teamwork. When presenting data, tell the story behind the numbers - how a specific metric led to a breakthrough decision. These stories make abstract concepts tangible and relatable, fostering a deeper connection with your audience and making your message more impactful.
