Here's how you can tackle challenges in 3D Modeling projects using problem-solving skills.

Understanding the nature of a problem in 3d is one of the most frustrating but important steps of modeling. It's good to have a checklist of a few common problems: Are your normals the wrong direction? Are your verts doubled? Is you scale applied? Most importantly: is there a limitation in my software? I recently struggled with something in a fluid sim, messing for days and failing to fix it, before realizing that the software couldn't do what I wanted. Thankfully this lead me to my final point: is there a way to cheat? If it's not going to hurt you later down the road, shortcuts are often preferable in 3d because they're often easier to fix and render faster, but make sure you use them wisely or they could create more problems.

3d design has taught me so much about the world around me. Unceasingly, I pay involuntary attention to light caustics and grains of sand in corners of stairs wondering how I would reproduce them. So often when I want something to look authentic, I find myself going down massive rabbit holes into the physics of refraction or buoyancy and it is such a joy to learn about the world around me through reproducing it in 3d. I draw a lot of inspiration from the greats before me, particularly visual effects masters such as the great Ray Harryhousen the animation of Fleischer, and of course monster classics such as King Kong and Godzilla paying attention to lighting, character movement, and general vibes.

One of my number one pieces of advice to 3d generalists is to not do everything. If you want to tell a story, you're going to need to stop modelling every single grain of sand and piece of garbage and allow yourself to rely on community assets. While you may need to create hero props and modify others to suit your style, your goal is to tell the story, so break down the things you need to design and the things you can import from others so you can spend your time wisely. Credit appropriately, of course, but why spend time sculpting dents in a garbage can which will be blurred out in the background when you can focus on getting the obnoxious smirk on your character to foreshadow a twist in the next scene.

Experiment with smaller models when running into a setback. It'll be easier to run analytical processes and solutions before you make permanent alterations or even reach an exhaustion point with your project that you'll have to take a break from it
