Here's how you can switch from a different field to Library Services.

Years ago, people gravitated toward the library profession because they "loved books." Most librarians continue to enjoy working with books, but the skills and talents that librarians bring to their workplaces expand far beyond the covers of a book. Teachers may enjoy serving as youth services or young adult librarians. Those with tech backgrounds and certifications can bring their talents to maintaining trusted digital repositories. Historians and genealogists may have an interest in archives. Those who enjoy speaking and public relations may contribute as effective outreach librarians. If you have an interest in library work, visit nearby libraries and look at the webpages of others to get a sense of the wide range of services offered.

Although a graduate degree in library and info science is still considered the "union card" for most professional librarian positions, real-world work experience as a library assistant or paraprofessional is valuable. Before investing in a library science degree or taking out student loans, visit library types (public, academic, special, archives) and get a feel of how these facilities operate. Perhaps consider volunteering, even if only for a couple of hours a week, to see the daily operations and talk with staff. Ask questions to those who have finished their education. While many library schools offer most courses online, are there opportunities for fieldworks or to take classes with adjuncts who can introduce you to best practices?

While joining national organizations, such as the American Library Association, is helpful, those with limited resources should network by getting involved with state and local library, archive, or digital groups. Attend a Friends of the Library event or meeting. Learn about governance by attending a library board meeting. If your interests intersect with specific areas (such as literature), go to events in those areas (such as book discussion clubs). Visit the reference desk and ask librarians what networks within your area have proven to be the best places for them to build connections. Are there groups like Toastmasters or similar organizations that also may be beneficial, outside of the traditional library world?
