Diverse teams do not tend to be mediocre. Usually, depending on their leadership, they are either really bad or they are the most innovative and high performing. Diverse teams are more complicated than more homogenous teams and therein lies the work of embracing the diversity. Often, the first step in leading or participating in a diverse team is simply embracing the messiness that comes with difference. Diverse teams are more uncomfortable until- through awareness, communication, empathy- they become comfortable spaces where people can bring the best of what makes them unique. When we recognize the discomfort and strive for collaboration in spite of it, we are embracing diversity. Then the innovation and creative magic can happen.

One thing I found helpful is to invite experts to present the different cultures that are present in the team. Make it part of a kick-off, to add both new insights and fun to know facts. What you know will not scare you. And fearful team members is something you want to avoid since fear makes people less smart and less creative.

Diversity in the workplace allows for varying opinions. These opinions are not always in agreement and this is where the value shows up. Being around people who have the same background and opinions as you doesn't give you or them the chance to see differently, and hear differently, and maybe disagree. The disagreement is a chance for one party to learn something and maybe advance their thinking.

Successfully navigating and leading diverse teams in future, where man meets machine, requires embracing diversity as a core strength. No matter the diversity, we are all human beings. We each have the need to be respected. We need to be tolerant of differing points of view. Just because we think the way we do something is the right way, we must stay curious and ask how they see things. We don't have to agree, but we do have to respect them as an individual.

One of the biggest learning I have had was avoid having any conversation in language not understandable by all the team members when you are in the professional setup. Using regional or local language while there are team members around who does not understand is not an inclusive behavior by any means.

Another very important factor that enhances clear communication is the communication channels, as a team leader, always ensure that you use a smooth channel for your communication. For example mail. This will help in future references and also help to carry other members of the team along while sending the messages.

Proper, clear and timely Communication is paramount for all the aspects when you are dealing with a team and not only diversity. The leaders should try to communicate simply so that the message is properly received and in my view there is no harm in repeating your message again to ensure it is received the way you wanted it to be! My personal experience is to breakdown the teams objectives and then assign them based on the individual's competency and skill. What works best for me is to map the team's competencies / skill and then regular review it as well with the team members progress every year. This helps me to keep a track of an individual's strengths and leverage it for the team's effectiveness. Many times having the open culture also helps the team members to be open to communicate the skill they want to add for themselves for development which helps to create additional roles and have a pipeline of the right talent required for seamless execution.

This is a time to be flexible with job roles. Often team members have skills and histories beyond the official job they were assigned when they were hired. Explore what additional value each team member can bring to the work and empower people to stretch beyond their current role.

In my view, it’s essential to recognize & understand that trust is not just a one-time achievement but an ongoing process. Consistent actions and transparent decision-making are fundamental. When team members see that leaders and colleagues are reliable and open, it builds a foundation of trust. Show genuine empathy and invest time in understanding each team member’s perspective. This involves active listening and valuing each person’s unique background and experiences. When team members are aligned with the organization’s purpose and values, it fosters a sense of belonging and commitment. When trust is established, it creates a safe space for taking risks and expressing creative ideas! ??

Building TRUST is imperative to all teams. Investing in your people, checking in on them and getting to know them on a personal level can build trust. Showing that your actions demonstrate inclusive and ethical behavior leads by example. Promote fairness and equity. This will serve as a beacon of trust for your team. Sometimes a conversation over "coffee" can make the difference and shows that you took the time to invest in your team and organization. Trust requires mutual respect and collaboration to move to the next level in a positive, rewarding work atmosphere.

Change is the only constant in our modern world, and one thing that is continually evolving is our perceptions of diversity - including expansions of ideas about who is included in a "diverse population." Remember that in addition to demographic diversity, it's also important to consider neurodiversity, socioeconomic diversity, and educational diversity (not everyone has had the same formative educational experiences - witness the current social-media discussion around "unschooling"). Anticipate that you will need to continually expand your ideas about what "diversity" is and includes. Your ability to adapt to changing concepts will influence your success as a leader of a diverse team.

I could not agree more with this statement. If you are not will to be a leader and adapt you will be left behind. With the development of social media,AI, and many other tools, the world is ever changing. Those who adapt and embrace this will always be one step ahead.

One approach to adaptation that I find most useful is the separation of our opinions and methods from our personal identity. Our opinions and methods are only as valuable as they are useful. When changes in the market or anywhere in our environment occur, having the psychological flexibility to say, “I used to do it this way” or “I used to think this way, but now …“ is a better frame of thought than “we always” . We unlock more of our potential when we build upon our capacity instead of limiting it.

In a workforce composed of millennials and Gen Z, adaptability is crucial. While adapting to new technologies is common, shifting our mindset requires more attention and effort. Adopting a new habit might take 21 days of consistent practice, but changing deeply held beliefs is significantly more challenging because people naturally cling to their long-held convictions. It’s essential to acknowledge that we cannot always be right, and embracing change and adaptability is the only path to growth. By focusing on mindset adaptation, we create a more resilient and innovative team capable of thriving in an ever-evolving business landscape.
