Here's how you can successfully integrate legacy systems into a modern system architecture.

Proper analysis and well understanding of the objectives of the migration play the major part of achieving the integration or full migration, this is why this step must take all the time needed to reach to a solid understanding and documentation that will be the road map of any later step as well as the reference for any stakeholder for this project.

What purpose existing system is fulfilling should be assessed and documented as base line for the upgrade. The impact of the existing system in the enterprise should be defined, to prioritize and define the scope of change introduced by integration. These capabilities will help us to define the gaps and how to fill it along with business objectives. Integration is not about to migrate or transform information/data from source to target, it should be designed to connect with other systems as well without compromising integrity of data.

Once integration objectives and baseline are ready, planning is required. It can be impacted by cost and time. So it should be planned keeping all these restrictions or limitations in perspective. Planning should ensure minimal disruption to ongoing business or within SLA of contract. Using agile methodology, tracking and priorities can be defined with well defined success and constraints.

Turn these into alerts in the event they should fail to be true or exceed expectations to save considerable time later on investigating false positives once the new system is operational.

Once you start to answer the questions I mentioned in section 1 "Assess Needs" You will start to have a vision and landmarks that enable you to sketch your plan.. It's like a puzzle you collect it piece by piece so don't expect to find full answers from day one.. And create your plan in a cycle form of iterations with timeframe and actions to perform. Integration, can be achieved using tools or technologies. It depends on our requirements, budget, talent pool and future prospects of chosen solutions. Integration can be performed one by one or all at once but, each approach has its own drawbacks. So it should be chosen aligned with business operations and objectives of the future.

No application is an island. No matter how legacy/heritage the tech stack is, there are technologies possible to integrate at layers of database (ODBC, JDBC, or DB connector for non-RDBMS), or MQ (almost all legacy platforms support MQ by default), or API/Kafka and other modern approaches. The key is to keep it abstracted, so that the modernization of integration can evolve over time. Contract-first approach, so that consuming application and legacy application are not tightly coupled at hip (which can happen at Data-layer integration). In such case, add an intermediary process that runs independently that delinks legacy app from the app it integrates with. Same approach for historically favorite files based exchange, use translation layer

Legacy systems might be running on outdated technology, which means it might not be used anymore and support is also stopped. So in this case there may be multiple rounds of upgrade to achieve the desired level of integration. Start with the latest compatible version of upgrade to sync up the code and artifacts. Once it's done go to the next iteration until all is done. It helps us to maintain business continuity along with upgradation.

I'm a big believer in the gradual approach to updating legacy systems, just like the Strangler Pattern recommends. By starting with the updates that really make a difference in performance and reliability—things like new software interfaces or better database management—we can keep risks low and make sure the transition goes smoothly.

Start with the easy low-hanging fruit. Identify a simple standalone component without any deep coupling or dependencies. Don't fall into the trap of selecting your most critical and complex features first. The goal is to do the transition in a safe controlled way, while gradually reducing complexity. Make sure to align with project managers and other stakeholders, so they don't push for "go for highest business impact first". Create integration points in your legacy codebase which proxy requests to the new system. Finally deprecate the old functionality from the legacy system.

Develop Integration Interfaces Create APIs, microservices, or middleware that will allow the legacy systems to communicate effectively with modern applications. This might involve: ? My domain is electromechanical systems and in my view what is key is defining, managing and controlling interfaces. Its super important that the legacy app is not on unsupported tech stack, tech debt in which case the risk of running on unsupported platforms is much bigger nightmare. Always ensure the legacy app is atleast on supported tech stack, such upgrades naturally ease the choices of integration with modern platforms/technologies.

Ensure Compatibility: Ensure that the modern architecture is compatible with the legacy systems in terms of data formats, communication protocols, security requirements, and performance expectations.

Training plans should be prepared and ready for the clients/users to refer and utilise the new features and new platform. It should contain user guide, troubleshooting steps and point of contact for improvement or bug reporting. Always provide distribution email so current and relevant stakeholders get notified on the feedback loops.

Train Thoroughly: Provide comprehensive training to the personnel involved in operating, maintaining, and interacting with the integrated system. This includes both technical staff and end-users.

Legacy applications are valuable. They are not to be frowned upon. They are proven, reliable and have been keeping companies in business. Respect that. Ofcourse costs and labor shortage and time to market could be drivers to adapt modern technologies. But factor in the QoS/NFR that legacy platforms offer, which are not easy to match with most modern platforms unless we do super smart engineering and architecture job deliberately to address QoS/NFR. Dont miss that point. Not easy to match legacy platform's such as mainframe's reliability and availability and security.

If parts of the systems are not integrated as is, but migrated to new technologies, then a good idea would be to keep it backwards compatible, and have testing in place, that the newer versions work as expected by themselves and within the system.

Legacy applications might have been designed as monolith architecture. In such case, the migration project must be carefully designed to ensure there are no production failures while migration takes place. Ensuring redundancy, high availability, and quick fail-over in case of problems is a must, as in many cases, the upgrade is not only on the vendor's side, but also on the customer end (for example, newer APIs, moving from batch processing to stream processing, adding enhanced security applicable only on the new architecture etc.), hence both sides much be able to maintain parallel environments with load - old and new.
