Day 1 tasks are before production and a majority of the infrastructure must be built through infrastructure as a code. Day 2 tasks are related to repeat nature of operations that can be automated using various workflow techniques that includes scripting, schedulers and integration tools.

Automation in cloud computing is not just about saving time; it's about enhancing reliability and consistency in your workflows. By automating tasks like virtual machine deployment, backups, and system updates, you reduce the risk of human error and ensure that your systems are always up-to-date and secure. Resource consumption in many serverless stacks, where the amount consumed directly translates to cost of infra. Borrowing from my perspective earlier, its also important to consider the time taken by cloud providers to respond for certain requests. For example some operations might be faster locally than on cloud providers API's. In such cases the optimizations would be the usual: using async calls/waits, providing call-back wherever supported etc, batching requests or using provided batch calls instead of individual calls.

Integrating security best practices from the start, like leveraging IAM policies and automated vulnerability scans, added minimal time to the workflow. Continuous monitoring is sometimes missed in fast paced environments with catastrophic effects. A slightly important aspect of this is distributed tracing of events as they happen across the infra. In today's world its seldom the case that a single service is responsible for an entire product of an Organization. Hence, having the capability to both continuously monitor & to trace the flow of particular event(s) helps in faster issue identification. We also need to have good visibility, metric resolution & access(good query support) on all metrics to make sure attribution can be quickly built & validated across a combination of services within the infra. There are developments beyond this too, but I don't think I'll be able to cover all.
