If by "promotion" we mean switching from coding to management, that's not staying ahead of the curve, because you are switching to doing something else instead of software engineering. Also, getting promoted sounds to me like the wrong driver for young people going into software engineering in the first place

Although technical skills are important, you must also practice your communication, presentation and negotiation skills. It doesn't matter if your future is Engineer Manager or Principal Engineer; your job will require you to talk and present your point of view clearly, using good arguments rather than authority.

Constant learning to keep yourself ready to take on the new technology innovations happening around. And if you are a manager, share the learnings with the team, so that all travel with same speed and in same direction.

Online communities and persistence are especially important. Participating in things like stack exchange or product and vendor specific forums a few times a week builds you a reputation over the years. It works like compound interest; you grow from your new content and from everything you have done in the past. Eventually people recognize you and seek you out, or at least you have a great way to backup your skills when interviewing. Being a visibly known expert in communities holds a lot more sway than most certifications as it shows dedication and persistence over a wide time span.

Learn about the business first. If you don’t know the purpose of what you are building you are never going to go ahead. Next truly understand how the business processes manifest themselves as data structures. In today’s world, most developers are essentially coding UI and CRUD without the slightest know how of the underlying business / data logic. Connect and collaborate with the business side of your organization. Software Engineering does not thrive in silos. Be curious! Yes you can go to networking events, live on the internet, learn tech, write good code etc., Those are baseline expectations; just table stakes. How are you contributing to the business behind your tech? How did you make a difference, these decide your career!

I cannot agree more with how valuable a good networking is in climbing the success ladder professionally. It’s like a GPS to your career path. Not just participating but putting forward your opinions in events, meetings is highly appreciated.

It’s crucial to curate your network consistently, whether through attending trade events or meeting for coffee. You have to be deliberate, unless you are an extrovert. Networking is crucial in software engineering. Build strong internal relationships, attend industry events, join online communities, and seek mentorship. Though out of all the other methodologies that we have for development such as SCRUM and Waterfall, Agile takes the cake.

The only way you can identify and shape that is to have a deep understanding of the business vertical including cross-functional processes and insights of the multiple business aspects (financial, technical, competition, compliance, etc)

If you are working for a product company, it means you job isn’t to write code only. you need to contribute towards making the product better, so you need to combine your technical, domain knowledge, communication, and also you need to put yourself in customer's shoes, to know if we are actually solving their problem or not and how can we improve the product.

So, keep a deep understanding of web/software development fundamentals. Understand the cloud's main features and their do's and don'ts. What are they for, and what are the risks? Understanding that you will still be able to contribute to the application and architecture

Foremost most, groom your mindset and work on personal development. Understand what is value addition in the organization. Introspect on skill gap, work towards building skills. Communicate to express not impress. Discuss about the issues/problems, and potential solutions. Volunteer to address them.
