I firmly believe regardless of the type of work you do, you always have to be able to clearly communicate in order to be successful. There are nuances to corporate communications that need to be learned, but there's also power in the diversity of your prior experience which you can apply to communications that can be a differentiator. Don't believe you need to forget everything about your prior experiences to be successful in communications. That's just simply not true.

Your network is everything in a career change. Meet as many people as you can in corporate communications. Join professional associations such as IABC and PRSA, attend events, and expand your network. On LinkedIn, follow relevant hashtags such as #corporatecommuniations and #communications. Engage with content you find especially relevant, post substantive comments, and spark dialogue with people in the field. Send personalized LinkedIn invitations. Ask key people if they would do a brief informational interview with you. Ask them about their career journey and what advice they would give you to you as a potential career changer. Put their advice into action and keep them posted on your journey. Offer any insights or advice to them as well.

They can also help strategize and develop methods for communicating change effectively so that it is accepted by staff members.
