Transitioning into a project leadership role starts with embracing learning. Dive into understanding project management fundamentals, leadership styles, and the unique dynamics of your team. Seek mentorship and feedback to identify areas for personal growth. Actively listen to your team's ideas and concerns, fostering an inclusive environment. Set clear goals and expectations, while being open to adapting strategies as needed. Build trust by being accountable and transparent. An effective project leader is someone that is capable in many different facets of management and leadership. The fundamentals of project management are important, but so are soft skills such as communication, conflict resolution, and motivation. The best thing you can do is be a sponge to new ideas. Make an honest assessment of your own capabilities, then seek out opportunities to address your weaknesses and capitalize upon your strengths. Learn why people use certain methodologies, rather than simply how to use them. It's one thing to know how to swing a hammer. It's another to know when and where to swing it.

One thing I have found helpful is utilizing this critical time period to build meaningful relationships with your project team. Taking a leadership role can be daunting as you navigate learning stakeholder needs, communication preferences, project technical requirements, etc. Sitting down with a work stream lead builds trust between you and the lead, helps you identify their motivations so you can draw on this layer, and earns their confidence that you are engaged in the program at the granular level.

A trick that I use is to incorporate key members of the team in building strategic goals and seeking feedback early and often. Including members of the team in crafting their future drives immediate buy in and motivation to execute the vision.

Making sure you have the correct resources and the budget associated with them is key to Project leadership. If you can't get your team what they need to succeed, your project is doomed befor it starts. Mastering the use of resources not only allows you to accomplish more with less it shows you can be a profit generator. Want an easy transition into project leadership? You need to: master risk analysis, know how to appropriately identify key stakeholders, and most importantly be able to build a decision matrix. If you can do these things, and do them well, as a leader you have removed a lot of obstacles. Leadership is about empowering the team to achieve to the best of there ability. Focus on this and the rest falls into place.

This is easily the most difficult this to manage. As a lead, you have to be “on” 24/7. Make the feedback cycle continuous and build an environment of grace. Make it ok to have an off day and show that you are, in fact, human. In addition, reinforce that mistakes are an element of learning. Take the time to teach and express accountability. Or, if you are looking for the secret sauce to all this, “Just be a good person.” As Tamar Dennis used to say.

Leading by example might be critical in becoming a project leader. My experience over the last couple of years in project management suggests that leadership becomes more important than management in projects. This should not be a surprise since leadership is always a much more capable concept than management, but it was only clear in projects recently. You can quickly learn project mechanics, including the rules, templates, and vehicles. It won't be enough. Leading people and leading projects are the key distinguishing factors. The way you inspire the teams for project scoping, motivate them for meaningful contributions and high-quality deliveries and celebrate bigger and smaller wins all matter.
