Here's how you can smoothly transition to a new career using Servant Leadership principles.

Embracing empathy in every career path is very important. It gives us the ability to understand and put ourselves in others shoes and help us manage our emotions. In my experience,it helps build trust and better connections which leads to better communication and collaboration.

In a new career path, or an old career path, I recommend the book, “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie. One of my biggest takeaways is to seek to understand not respond. You build relationships by listening, understanding, and reflecting that back to the person you’re working with. Listening is one gateway to empathy.

Servant Leadership is the catalyst for a successful career transition. By prioritizing listening, empathy, and self-awareness, you'll build trust and credibility with your new team. Focus on understanding the organization's needs and aligning your skills to meet those needs. Remember, a Servant Leader's power comes from empowering others, not from personal gain. This approach will help you establish a strong foundation in your new career

In my humble opinion, in addition to being empathetic, supportive, available and approachable, you need to maintain a high level of integrity to be successful in servant leadership. If you want people to look up to you then just live and breathe the values you preach. Trust me there will be moments in your life, if it hasn't already been, where you would feel lost on the verge of going against your principles but that's exactly what the test is all about. Always remember the difference that leadership is about helping people follow your vision and goal but servant leadership is all about helping people strive to achieve their own.

Career transition is a reality check that lets you see how good your network is. It's when you no longer have authority or influence over their career or business that people show their true colours. In general, you get out what you put in over the years...

Reciprocal or symbiotic relationships are key in life. It doesn’t take a lot to keep in touch with people in your networks. Say hello, comment on their posts, reach out not just because you need something but because it is the right thing to do.

Building and nurturing professional networks is crucial during a career transition. Attend industry events, join relevant online forums, and engage with professionals on platforms like LinkedIn. These connections can provide valuable advice, job leads, and opportunities for collaboration. A robust network also offers diverse perspectives and resources, which can help you navigate your new career path more effectively.

Start gaining knowledge about the potential career and start networking with people who are currently in similar roles. Gaining knowledge about the career first will give a basic understanding and will help you talk the talk, that will build better relationships with the people you plan to network with. Take feedback and improvise. You might have a unique skillset which you could offer to your network that could help build trust. Its better to be prepared and not have an opportunity, rather than have an opportunity and not be prepared.

Think of your network as a garden that needs regular care and attention. As you transition careers, reach out to individuals in your new field with a genuine desire to learn and serve, not just to gain an advantage. Offer your unique skills and assistance where needed, and you’ll find others more willing to help you grow. Remember, even the best gardeners need a little help from their friends!
