Here's how you can skillfully address questions about your experience in an interview.

From my experience as both a hiring manager and a coach preparing candidates for interviews, one often overlooked but valuable skill is the ability to learn on the job and from team members. It’s crucial to recognize that initial failures are part of the process. Let’s be honest: no one can solve every problem right away. The most interesting and genuine candidates are those who can admit they don’t know everything but are resourceful and, most importantly, open to learning and developing.

A deep reflection of your experience and how it fits and may add value to potential employer creates a sense of authenticity and connection. Understand the needs of the employer broadly , then narrow to what the role is expected to achieve. Share stories if type of assignments, skills you found useful, aspects of collaboration, what you leaned and useful now. Cite a few examples that relate to positions duties, and be specific, eg I have got experience designing successful urban water distribution systems. last project was xxxx, summarise your specific role and outcome, including challenges and how you or your team handled them. Rember, its about knowledge, skills and application, where , how long and where = have experience.

In my experience, people being interviewed leave too much of the hard work to their interviewer. That is, they expect the interviewer to figure out how all of the experiences and stories they share are relevant to the role they’re hoping to be hired for. That’s a risky proposition. What if the interviewer doesn’t make the right connection? I think it’s up to the person being interviewed to take control of the narrative and make the explicit connection between their experience and the challenges they’re likely going to face.

Most candidate fail miserably in describing value to recruiters/or hiring managers. The recruiter has all your academic, and background. They have a problem to solve, by hiring you, they want to know if you can solve the problems and add value. You show value by demonstrating how you added value by examples, qualitatively or quantitively. Cite examples using data, eg, solved customer retention/satisfaction by conducting survey, implemented programme which improved retention/satisfaction by x% from the previous Y% within 12 months, or reduced production line wastage from 10% to 6% in 6 months by changing xxx system realising ....savings/increase in revenue. etc.

Recruiters get put off by candidates who either dont undertsand the question, or dont respond to what the question, or derft, digress. Always listen and understand exactly what the question is seeking, and address it precisely. Dont add issues irrelevant to question thinking they add value. If the question is not clear, seek clarification. Secondly focus on the requirements of the role from the job advert to understand duties and responsibilities, and what if you were the recruiter/employer would expect by interpreting correctly the question. Is the question asking about skills or knowledge, leadership, experience or examples. Then decide the examples you can share.

There is nothing as powerful in an interview than demonstrating energy, positivity, and good rapport. Some questions may require sharing unpleasant or challenging situations employment. Stick to the issues of the situation, dont be defensive, nor blame others/your boss/organisation. Describe the situation, its facts, your view, others views, and how ended, good or bad, Show humility, if a an ethical issue, give your thoughts and how you moved on. Share lessons learned, leave a an impression of person who is understanding, tolerant, has a stand, can be relied on to speak out on issues, and yet accommodative. Share lessons of such experiences and how its made you relate better with colleagues and become a better team leaders.

An interview occasionally drifts to new frontiers, while a candidate was expecting to be asked about brain surgery! This happens especially when role may be leadership, or indeed expected to steer a new technology or operation. The focus could be on your leadership, or ability to adapt, deal with multiple issues, res-skill or upskill. Or digging deeper into specific issues like managing in a VUCA environment, Strategic Management, technology, global trade, climate resilience etc. If that happens, quickly adjust and demonstrate your knowledge, competencies, experience and give a few examples. Its an opportunity to show you have broad but well grounded knowledge, or experience in area. Show enthusiasm in learning.
