Here's some things I wish I would have done better as an intern: 1. Be willing to try new tasks. 2. Be flexible. If work is happening on a Saturday and they need your help to cover, be available. 3. Ask lots of questions. Take an interest. Find out the what, why, where and how of your task. Get to know your co-workers. Why do they do what they do? What do they like, or dislike about their job? 4. Read the room. Take initiative. Be aware. Look around to see if things need to be done - ask if you can help with that. 5. Practice your communication skills. How can things be explained better to you, how can you better express what you are thinking? 6. Listen carefully and follow through with directions and sound advice.

I never had the chance to be an intern but I worked with some interns through my career and those who stepped up to support the team, had confidence, and openness to learn and listen are the ones that succeed as interns and received a job offer to continue collaborating with the company.

It is quite difficult to keep up to date as small offices, as big ones, are usually busy trying to get the job done. That is why you have to try to go the extra mile and try to learn it when ever you get enough free time for it. If it is worth it and has value and you manage to introduce it to the office, it can add much to your own value as well. Sometimes it is even worth asking your boss to send you to a workshop or a course that can improve the work method in place. Who knows, it may have also been a subject they were interested but we're to occupied to get to it and forgot about it, and you bringing it up may actually help them complete there own personal desire and want to send you to do it to bring in the knowledge!
