In a previous role I was in a meeting that involved multiple teams and departments. A senior leader (on another team) made one statement “ we lack product experts”, it almost a throw away line - but I took that to heart. That was the problem I wanted to solve and the one I knew I could solve. I began to educate not only myself on products but also hosted vendor learning sessions to benefit the teams at large. By no means was a huge lift to do this - but it definitely allowed me to show my value. I couldn’t solve all of the problems leadership had and neither do you! In a previous role I became a subject matter expert because of some amazing leaders who mentored me when I started. Having people that would take the time to answer my questions and show me tips and tricks on how to do my job, and ways I could do it more efficiently we're of such incredible value. When roles changed for some of my leaders, I was in a position to mentor and facilitate those same learnings to my new leader and other cross functional team members. The core foundation that came from this cycle of mentorship was an incredibly strong team making daily organizational impacts. Mentorship should be the cornerstone of any team. Sharing knowledge an experience should always be seen as organizational wealth.
