To often, especially these days, professionals "tell" but don't "show". They'll say they work great in a team but don't show any examples. What is better is telling stories examples of how you work well in a team so the interviewers can INFER you work well in a team.

I've held hundreds of interviews. And like all humans, I love a great story. When preparing for an interview, use AI to generate a list of 20 interview questions, and for each, come up with a meaningful story that aligns with the question. Be sure that your answer includes the problem that you were facing, the solution that you and the team came up with, any obstacles along the way, and the outcome (even if it wasn't positive, what did you learn?). The key here is practice. By practicing prior to the interview, you will be more confident in having a good, applicable example. It is challenging to to come up with something on the spot, so remember: Proper Planning Promotes Peak Performance!

When sharing these stories ensure that the language is inclusive. Give credit to other team members and share how team members' skills and actions complimented yours. Or even how you've experienced conflicts initially but after successful collaboration the team surpassed set goals.

As the saying goes: "there is no I in a team". If you talk about a successful project you were part of, it is always good to use "we" to describe its success. The interviewer can always ask you for your individual contribution, allowing you to use "I".

Use "we" purposefully. What do I mean by "purposefully"? Be clear on how the team met the shared goal while also being conscious of the specific skills and contributions you provided to the success. I've interviewed people that focused on the "we" to a degree that I and other panel interviewers were not sure whether the interviewee contributed or were just along for the ride. As you tell your story be sure to highlight the human and technical skills you contributed. Noting your awareness of other's skills and being able to successfully contribute as leader, follower, and supporter on the same team can be very valuable. Remember "we" is important but it's "you" they are interviewing for the position. Be purposeful using "we".

Highlight any unique teamwork skills you’ve developed through reading, observing or other learning methods. This shows your commitment to continuous improvement. Your goal is to paint a picture for the interviewer, showing them how you’ll contribute to their team. Clearly articulating your teamwork experiences and the results they yielded will help them visualize your fit within their organization.

Adaptability in team settings is not just about surviving change but thriving amidst it. Sharing personal stories where you navigated through shifting team dynamics or project pivots can illustrate your resilience and problem-solving skills. For instance, recounting a time when you successfully led a team through a sudden project overhaul can demonstrate your ability to stay focused and motivate others, even in uncertain conditions. This not only highlights your flexibility but also your leadership and strategic thinking capabilities.

During times when I've led an interview, I am intrigued by situations that haven't gone well as much as raving successes. Anyone can share their shining moment, but how did you handle yourself and your teamwork during times of adversity? Be sure to share trials and tribulations as much as wins when interviewing, and most importantly, provide details on: 1) What "in the moment" approaches did you take? 2) What did you learn from the experience? 3) How did that shape your approach moving forward? Bonus points if you can talk up other people on your team when you share (this shows that you support others on your team, and don't focus on just yourself).

During the interview, ask questions about the team you will be part of. When and how often do they meet? What is the process for making decisions?

Also think outside the box when it comes to demonstrating your team-work capabilities. You don't always have to spotlight your productive roles in projects, etc -- think about other ways to demonstrate your collaborative nature. This might involve a time when you were willing to not dig in your heels about something that you wanted as part of a project -- and instead, you accepted that the general consensus was in a different direction, so you gladly jumped on that different idea with the team. Showing people that you're not going to be causing contention in the team is often even more powerful than showing what positive contributions you can make.

Ask yourself: * On your current team - what makes you the "go to" person? * What (if any) of your human/technical skills does your current team underutilize? By answering the 2 questions above you get a feel for the current, transferable skills you will bring to the new team and the skills you may want more freedom to demonstrate if chosen for the new role. As a hiring manager I was particularly interested in candidates that demonstrated self-awareness beyond their own role. For example, working with other team members to take on routine tasks the candidate normally performs may demonstrate not only delegation skills but an awareness of risk and proactive steps to mitigate those risks. That may sound basic but it's very powerful.
