Here's how you can showcase your passion for podcasting in an interview.

Conveying energy and expressing enthusiasm can be a tricky thing to do if you're not naturally charismatic. This is a personality trait that is definitely worth acquiring in life in general. If you can forge and harness this ability, you will be able to relay a motion and create the skill of selling things concepts, and even yourself. When it comes to podcasting this applies as well and is equally if not more important. A tactic I personally employ when sitting down in front of the microphone is trying to envision myself as though I'm speaking to a young school child (or children) and try to relay information with excitement and emotion to get the most engagement. Just as one would when telling a child a story.

Sharing personal stories is key. Talk about your favorite episodes and why they stand out to you, or mention specific moments when podcasting had a significant impact on your life. Highlight any unique skills or experiences you bring to the table, like successful campaigns or collaborations. Being specific about what excites you can help the interviewer see your dedication and vision for the future.

Sharing your passion for podcasting during an interview is key to standing out. Think of it like sharing a story with a friend – you want to spark their interest and excitement. When you talk about how you stumbled upon podcasting and what captivates you, it shows your genuine connection to the medium. Maybe it's the thrill of storytelling, the sense of community, or the technical wizardry behind sound editing. Whatever it is, let it shine through with your energy and smile. Your enthusiasm not only shows you're genuinely interested but also that you're eager to share your love for podcasting.

Prepare! Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.... Jot some notes down before recording. You dont need to and shouldn't write down word for word. You should create a list to keep you on track and make sure you hit all the points you are aiming for. Additionally, pretend you are speaking to children. Get animated and excited. Smile and use your hands. When explaining something or sharing information dont use terms like, "I think" and "maybe". Be definitive. For example, instead of, "I really think this is going to help a lot of people". Say, "I know this is going to help a lot of people." Show confidence. The more emotion the better!

Talk about specific projects and the outcomes you achieved, like audience growth or successful collaborations. Mention any challenges you faced and how you overcame them, as this shows problem-solving skills. If you have any metrics or testimonials that demonstrate your impact, share those as well. This not only showcases your expertise but also your dedication and effectiveness in the podcasting field.

I believe people enjoy hearing the good, the bad, and the ugly aspects of podcasting. Over the years, I've made many mistakes that I can laugh about now, and sometimes those mistakes even enhance the podcast. It's also alright to occasionally share your successes with metrics. One story I often share is about a podcast episode I titled “The American Dream.” Although I thought it was a great title and episode, it didn’t perform well in terms of metrics. After changing the title to “The Difference Between Opportunity and Regret,” it became my most successful podcast to date, garnering almost 100,000 views.

I've found there's at least two different types of guest episodes. The first is an interview -- think Diary of a CEO. The second is a conversation -- think JRE. The second allows you as the host to remain a subject matter expert. The first makes your guest the expert and you the journalist. Which isn't a bad thing. But it's different from highlighting your expertise as a host. Because too many business leaders start a podcast to leverage it as a thought leadership tool. But they forget that all of that "sales equity" goes to the guest by way of their interview style. So instead of only asking questions - add your perspective and let the conversation flow back and forth as opposed to relying on questions to direct the conversation.

In my experience, as a podcast producer and podcast host, the most appreciated and engaging episodes/segments are the ones with the most emotion. For example, a guest or host that tells a story that involves in motion in which they may start crying or laughing while telling the story. This works because as humans we can all relate to emotions. Whereas, stories without emotions may be subject to appreciate by those who can only comprehend your message or experience from the story.

Highlighting the impact of your podcasting journey is like showing the world your podcast's heartbeat. It's not just about the numbers; it's about how your voice resonates and affects lives. When you share stories of how your podcasts sparked conversations or inspired real action, you're showing your dedication to the craft. Meaningful feedback from listeners isn't just validation; it's fuel for your passion. As a podcast agency owner, I've seen firsthand how impactful storytelling can create communities and drive change. So, when you're in an interview, don't hesitate to share those impactful moments—they're the essence of why we do what we do in the podcasting world.

This question should really be reworded to "Show your passion for the topic on a podcast you're guesting on." One of the biggest things to do is be approachable. Have that fire, but don't let it out too much — unless that's your shtick. If your persona is "The Raging Marketer", yeah I expect some yelling and passion, but if that's not you — slow down your delivery and tell stories that have an emotional impact. Silence is a tool as well. People love stories and they love to hear folks come from behind. One that I tell that exhibits my passion frequently is that my company started with $26 and a spouse that wasn't initially supportive. Teaching others how to follow THEIR dreams in a genuine way gets more traction than anything else.
