When delay arises , it is true that many possible sources of the problem exist ,and more often than not ,the actual culprit is not the one that was the initial suspect. The key here is to develop strategies ,to figure out what the problem is and how it actually affects your database. Develop a skill ,in ruling out potential suspects first ,in order to eventually guide yourself to the actual target. Prove your points with logical steps , and communicate the way you achieve that to the interviewer. For example say , when delay arises, I focus on network latency first, then look at indexes ,then procedures and after , as a last resort i think about table partitioning or server upgrades. Have a navigation plan ,from least invasive to most.
