Professional certifications do matter, especially first 3-5 years of the career, when establishing your name and building the reputation. In the Networking world, the leader is still the Cisco with their CCNA/CCNP certs. While CCNA (or JNCIA from Juniper) are good for any environment, as they teach fundamentals, more advanced CCNP/JNCIS certs are worth doing, in my opinion, only if you actually work with the cert's vendor (Cisco/Juniper). As they are more vendor specific certifications.

Professional certifications CAN matter, but they are not everything. I've hired a CCIE who we soon found out wasn't a team player and didn't work all that hard. They didn't last long. I have also hired people who had no certifications but knew their stuff and were very successful. Certifications prove people can pass a test and should know what they're doing. They do not prove they will be good team members.

I think certifications are a great foundation. They don’t necessarily provide you with all the answers for real world scenarios but they provide you with tools needed to discover new solutions. Having a strong foundation is imperative to growth in IT and most all industries. They also have the potential to get you in the door for interviews where you can showcase your knowledge and commitment to learning.

Technology is always changing, non-linearly, in many directions. Failure to heed the learning curve on newer technology, will eventually be reflected in your networks’ operations, and certifications are markers of your skill sets that are commonly accepted by employers. Certifications for network technologies have been around for 30+ years, and new certifications are being created to follow newer technologies - focus on those that you find most relevant to the network technologies you work (and intend to work) with.

Yes, I agree that the certification proves your knowledge in the field that you have it and makes you stand out from the other candidates. Liekt eh example CCNA, which is one of the fundamental Network certifications, the father of all network certification if I could say :). So, he certification does matter and I encourage everyone to take the certification in his/her field or the filed they want to progress.

Building trust with the employer is to show your knowledge and skills related to your certification. Like say for example my employer assigned me to manage the voip server. I manage the phone system by providing support when their is an issue with thier voip phone system. So, by looking at the server i was able to determine what is wrong and why the voip phone is not working

I'd suggest to keep a "brag"-sheet where you jot down your successes/lessons from failures in short form, without any identifiable information. It will come handy as the conversation starter at networking events/conferences/job interviews. Professionals love to hear "battle" stories. So looking at this record, you will be able to say "Stressful situations? Well, we had a client with the Fortigate 400E that failed completely, and while we had a spare Fortigate 500D for replacement, the back up config from the 400E could not be imported as is.
