What truly makes a difference is connection. A coach just starting out can be as effective as a veteran if they genuinely connect with their clients. Focus on understanding and aligning with your clients' needs—this approach fosters trust and promotes meaningful growth. Remember, your ability to connect isn’t just your skill; it’s your superpower. Research from the International Coaching Federation supports that strong client-coach relationships enhance satisfaction and outcomes. Dive in with heart; your impact will follow!

Reflect on Your Strengths and Areas for Growth: Take time to reflect on your strengths, skills, and areas for improvement as a coach. Identify specific areas where you excel and areas where you want to develop and grow. Define Your Long-Term Vision: Clarify your long-term career vision and aspirations as an executive coach. Where do you see yourself in the next five or ten years? What type of clients do you want to work with, and what impact do you want to make in their lives and organizations? Set SMART Goals: Create SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals that are clear, actionable, and attainable.

Consider using a scale from 1 to 10, where 1 indicates a need for significant improvement and 10 represents mastery. This can help you visually understand where you stand

I’m a big fan of setting small and realistic milestones in aim to reach a major milestone. Have you noticed how it feels discouraging to know that you have to do a bigger task? But when you divide it into small digestible tasks or steps, it becomes more realistic. There is a reason why we compare this to baby steps. Small but effective progress yields better and lasting results than big and intimidating tasks that create more room for errors, overwhelm, exhaustion, and a higher chance of procrastination or quitting the task altogether. With small steps or baby steps, when you fail, you know exactly where to correct immediately, when you win, you know exactly where to focus your effort.

This involves soliciting input from clients, peers, mentors, and supervisors to gain insights into your coaching effectiveness and areas for improvement. For example, you could request feedback from clients on the impact of your coaching sessions or ask colleagues for input on your coaching techniques. By incorporating feedback into your goal-setting process, you can refine your skills, address blind spots, and continuously enhance your coaching practice.

Convert feedback into actionable goals. For example, if feedback highlights a need for more structured sessions, you might seek additional training in session planning or develop your own templates to guide your meetings.

This involves adopting a growth mindset and actively seeking opportunities for personal and professional development. For example, you could enroll in additional coaching courses or workshops to expand your knowledge and skills. Additionally, you might engage in self-reflection after coaching sessions to identify lessons learned and areas for improvement. By prioritizing continuous learning, you can stay abreast of industry trends, refine your coaching techniques, and ultimately, achieve your career goals as a coach.

My problem is that I would like to have the knowledge and not necessarily the learning to get there. For some people it's the path and for other's it's the destination. Where ever you fall on this scale, find your best learning habits and strengthen those. How ast can you learn? Do you learn more by listening or talking? Observing or participating? Take the proper steps needed to get you the knowledge you intend on learning.

This is one of the most important lessons for me: read books, listen to podcasts, and establish a group (or more than one!) of fellow coaches with whom you regularly check in and commune. This has been so helpful in my own journey. I get new ideas, learn about resources, and each time we meet, I am reassured that this is indeed the right calling for me.

As a coach, your clients perceive you as an expert in your field and they expect nothing less than the best! What is not obvious is that when you coach, you are unintentionally learning from your client. You learn their ability to understand your methodology, you teach, tweak, and adjust while figuring out the most effective way to help them achieve a certain result. It’s that learning that should guide you to discover your hidden weaknesses and strength. Ask yourself for example, do I get stuck when trying to tweak or improvise with a struggling client, then look for resources to help you improve that area. When I do this, my clients tend to find clarity faster? Then look for resources to enrich that skill even more to set yourself apart.

Networking actively is vital for entry-level executive coaches. Engage with peers, mentors, and industry professionals to build connections and access opportunities for growth. Attend industry events, join coaching communities, and participate in online forums to expand your network. Actively seeking out networking opportunities can lead to valuable collaborations, mentorships, and referrals, ultimately advancing your career as a coach.

Networking all breaks down to "How much do you believe in yourself?"Do you know your worth? When you begin to realize that fear itself is the greatest setback and contribution to anxiety, then we can begin to subside the fear. "Don't have anything to say?" Research anyone who you think may be there so you have conversations starter, or know what sparks peoples interest. Seek Coaching and Mentoring: Every coach needs one or even more coaches and/or mentors for different challenges. Experienced coaches can provide guidance, support, and professional development opportunities. They can be your accountability partner, help you increase your goal clarity, and provide you with the power to see your goals from a different perspective.
