Here's how you can secure the most in-demand roles in the film production industry.

Although I do have a formal education, I learned 70% of my craft working, exploring, making mistakes and building from them. I’ve never used my qualifications to get hired. My ability to produce the goods and client recommendations, testimonials do that for me.

In the film industry, being a jack-of-all-trades can sometimes be more beneficial than being a master of one. Early in my career, I learned the basics of editing, sound design, and even a bit of animation. This diverse skill set made me more marketable and opened doors to various roles. Continuously honing your skills is key. Tip: Invest in online courses and workshops to expand your skill set. Platforms like MasterClass and Skillshare offer great resources to learn from industry experts.

Filmmaking is all about skills and execution. Skill is the number one reason people would want to hire you for. This means that the importance of your practice will exceed that of your education. The difference is kinda like reading about the gym VS actually going to the gym. Make sure you're always on the path to improve your skills!

I landed my first big break as a director through a connection I made at a networking event. It wasn’t just about knowing people; it was about staying in touch and offering value whenever possible. Building a strong network is essential for securing top roles in film production. Tip: Regularly attend industry events, join film groups on social media, and stay connected with your peers. Offer your help on their projects, and they’re likely to return the favor when an opportunity arises.

I emphasize the significance of networking in the film industry. Attending events like the Cannes Film Festival and local meetups in Ghana will allowed you to forge valuable connections with fellow creatives and industry professionals. Personally, distributing my photography and maintaining a presence on social media platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn expanded my reach and facilitated meaningful collaborations. Networking is not just about exchanging business cards; it's about nurturing relationships that can propel your career and open doors to exciting opportunities in the dynamic world of filmmaking.

Networking was never my strong suit, so I took classes on it! Find your strengths, and understand what skills leave you feeling most confident. You will build thick skin and have enough tact to start recognizing others have the strengths which make up for your weaknesses. You will see it doesn't have to be done alone and create an abundance of opportunities for yourself, rather than comparing yourself to others. Work together. Asking for help from just one person, will open you up to other like-minded people in a community and make you more approachable. My best team now, was right in front of me for years!

Similarly, diversifying your portfolio in film production, from narrative shorts to commercials, demonstrates your adaptability and creative range. Maintaining an online presence allows for wider exposure and accessibility to potential collaborators and employers. Your portfolio is a visual testament to your skills and passion, making it an invaluable tool in securing impactful roles in the competitive landscape of filmmaking.

How can people know you are a star? SHOW them! No matter at what stage you're at in your professional journey. Make sure to select the best and most outstanding work you can show. With each new cool project you create - update your portfolio. And perhaps more importantly show relevant works. Showing an amazing music-video to a corporate client won't get you too far. Clients want to see what they're going to get. Make sure you show them that! You can consider creating a portfolio for each sector of your work - its very efficient!

When I first started in production, my goal was to direct music videos and commercials, and I knew I needed a reel to showcase my capabilities. I worked at a production company with some recent film school graduates, and we formed a support group, now called a "mastermind" group, to help build each other's reels. We took on various roles, from DP to PA to Director, supporting each other as needed. Some of us went on to successful projects, like Jaume Collet-Serra, who directed big films like Orphan. I was signed by an agent after they saw my reel and soon after, Lauryn Hill asked me to direct a promo spot for her album, The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill. Building a portfolio is easier with peers who support and help each other succeed.

Know ALL the roles from ATL to BTL & be willing to vacillate between productions. Here’s my crib sheet: 1. Director: Demonstrate strong creative vision/storytelling. Bring samples! 2. Cinematographer: Master Camera Work. Develop a keen eye for visual storytelling & deep knowledge of equipment/techniques. ? Build Relationships — respect your producers. They’re the ones who sign your paycheck, lockdown crew, & make sure you’re fed. 3. Screenwriter: Continuously develop/refine your craft. Submit to competitions, pitch to producers, partner w/agents. 4. Producer: Understand the Biz! Gain knowledge in finance, management, production logistics & distribution. Build strong networks to pull together the right team for each project.

I recognize the importance of industry knowledge. In Ghana, understanding the local film landscape and collaborating with emerging talents is essential. Staying abreast of fashion trends and working closely with producers broadened my understanding of visual storytelling. Embracing industry trends and workflows not only helped me find my niche but also fostered meaningful dialogues with fellow professionals, enriching my journey in film production.

I can also add to understand your market. The film industry encompasses an amazing plethora of genre, tiers, unions, and commercial vs. theatrical. All of these categories breakdown much further. For example, if you are an amazing cinematographer for nature photography or commercial real estate, jumping onto a SAG production is another universe. If you are producing Indie films with the same budget and have never gained distribution on your own, this might be another area you need to strengthen. Consistently working with the same actors as a Director, possibly work outside of the state/country, or find talent that broadens this skill set. There is nothing wrong with understanding yourself to hone better your understanding and skill arena.

As working in film can also present opportunities to do international projects, its also important to be educated on the film/production landscape and protocols of the country you plan to visit. While the most countries share core film industry principles, there are nuances within each country that if ignored can cost scope, time, budget or even the viability of the project. Start by building a relationship with the film commission of the country you plan to do work with or hire a fixer- a local film professional who can assist with arrangement and logistics. This can ensure a smoother, less worrisome process.

I understand the importance of persistence in the face of challenges. In Ghana, despite initial rejections, I persisted in capturing the essence of our culture and historical moments, eventually landing global projects. Similarly, perseverance led to collaborations with influential producers, expanding my creative horizons. Every setback was a stepping stone towards success. By continually refining your skills and embracing opportunities, you pave the way for growth and eventual breakthroughs in the competitive world of film production.

Some doors do close and you have to respect that and move on to the next one. You can’t continue to insist once the connection doesn’t happen. Take the rejection as a sign that your work wasn’t the right fit at that time and have the strength of character to not take it personally. Reputations matter a lot and the entertainment industry is smaller than you think. Barraging potential connections doesn’t build a relationship it repels it. The best way to present is to be confident in your own brand without being consumed by ego and delusions of grandeur. Be open to notes, but don’t let anyone dismiss your dream. Career progression comes out of being able to pivot and adapt while building a reputation for quality and craftsmanship.

When I started creating films, one of the top producers I met told me something I remember till this day. He said "Filmmaking is a game of the last man standing". At first I didn't get what he meant. But after 15 years in the biz, I can tell you that 90% of success is determined by your ability to keep moving forward. Rocky said it best "It ain't about how hard you're hit, it's about how you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward."

There was a time when Visual Effects was all about Practical effects, which includes Miniatures, Matte Paintings, Animatronics, etc. It was this way for decades until CGI was born in the early '90s. The advent of CGI caused almost all of the workforce in Practical effects to lose their jobs within a decade. Those who refused to adapt, complained and bickered vehemently against this but never got their jobs back. Those who adapted and applied their Special Effects Acumen in Digital and Visual effects went on to secure supervisory jobs for Major studios. In our era, the change is AI tools, we must learn new skills in order to adapt to the inevitability of AI. The industry is always changing and we must learn to change with it.

I have personally found that collaborating with other professionals is an essential part of the filmmaking process. When I work with talented and experienced people, I am able to make better films and enjoy the process more.

One thing I find interesting, which may or may not help me, is not always following the trend. Some of my IMDb credits are across-the-board. That may cost me a job, but most of the time people find that interesting and more unique, as it does show in my line of producing that I understand what happens all over a working set. I have been an actor, an AD, a key grip, a casting Director, a location scout, and I even work with cameras. This helps me in securing the crew we need, talent that is correct for the production, and being able to fill in when it comes to boots on the ground work. Be versatile, instead of only choosing what is necessary to fit a profile.
