To efficiently develop skills in the hospitality sector and position oneself favorably in the job market, it is essential to leverage technology and digitalization. This includes participating in online courses specializing in hotel management, digital marketing, and customer service offered by educational platforms such as Coursera, edX, and LinkedIn Learning. Additionally, simulating hotel environments through property management software (PMS) like Opera and familiarizing oneself with CRM tools can enhance technical proficiency. Creating a digital portfolio showcasing practical experience and networking through professional networks like LinkedIn can facilitate access to job opportunities and establish a prominent presence in the sector

I look for people who have made SOME effort to get some experience. In yachting that would be “day work” where you are willing to be hired as a day laborer. That may be harder for large organizations, but it is the norm in yachts, and some smaller operations.

To develop an artisanal and efficient Curriculum Vitae (CV) in the hospitality sector, it is crucial to integrate technology and digitalization. Utilize online tools like Canva or Adobe Spark to design a visually appealing and professional CV, highlighting technical skills and specific achievements in hotel management and customer service. Including links to digital portfolios, updated LinkedIn profiles, and certifications obtained through online educational platforms provides a comprehensive view of your training and skills. Additionally, customize the CV for each position by using relevant keywords that align with specific job descriptions, ensuring better compatibility with Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).

Don’t be afraid to use a CV / Resume writing service until you become proficient in understanding what is the current trend / style, and also someone who can wordsmith in such a way as to represent you the best way.

To stay actively connected to a suitable network in the hospitality sector, it is essential to use digital platforms and professional social networks. LinkedIn is a fundamental tool for establishing and maintaining contacts, participating in relevant discussion groups, and following industry leaders. Attending webinars, virtual conferences, and online workshops offered by recognized organizations allows for expanding the network and staying updated on trends and job opportunities. Additionally, participating in specialized forums and online communities, such as Hospitality Net or HOSCO, facilitates the exchange of knowledge and experiences, enhancing professional visibility and access to new opportunities in the sector.

Networking is VITAL. Can’t say this enough. Build your network online, in person at various events, whatever it takes. Often times this network is where you’ll find your job…not from a job posting. In yachting I can tell you that every job I have ever gotten is through word-of-mouth, and NOT through any agent or job posting. Not one. When I hire for a crew member I ask my fellow Captains for referrals, and I end up with great candidates. But your network will be the thing that gets you to where you want to go.

Too many people give up too easily. If you want to do something, see it through. Remember, it will take a little time to get your foot in the door…but once you are in, you are in. Remember, you’ll not be paid what you want…that will come in time. But get your foot in the door then blossom where you are planted.

While online courses and a great CV/LinkedIn Profile are very important, completing an Internship in a hospitality company, known for high standards and practices, is a very powerful and doors-opening marker! When hiring for new entry jobs, I would prioritize the candidates with at least 2 months of practical presence and consistent exposure to the realities of a hospitality work environment.

1. Keep your phone put away! Turn it off, forget you even have one unless you are on break or off work. Seriously, this is a major issue for employers…people always on their phones. 2. Look at your Social Media accounts. If there anything there that could put you in less that a perfect light? If so, take it down. Perception is everything…and if what you have online is less than flattering for the potential employer, you may wish to take it down. Ladies…we don’t need to see photos in skimpy suits, short skirts, etc. Gentlemen…no drunk party pics. 3. If you drink, limit it to ONE drink when out with your network or work colleagues. Many careers are ruined by booze. 4. Nobody owes you anything. Get used to hearing “No” and be ok with it.
