Many a times, I have asked my students to help me with technological know how. Having said that, it is our responsibility as educators to ensure that digital literacy along with digital responsibility is acknowledged by students. This ensures the fine balance required.

In other words, tech should SOLVE a PROBLEM to increase STUDENT LEARNING ... If it just add time / complexity, run away!

Sometimes teachers don't want to use technology because they feel the students don't have the skills to be self-sufficient, and the teachers 'don't have time' to teach the skills and the curriculum. In reality, if you spend some time in the beginning of the year teaching those skills, the rest of the year goes more smoothly, and the students are now able to practice the new skills AND learn the curriculum better.

My district/team works hard to keep a “roadmap” available to teachers that directs them to various trainings on the tools our district leverages. I believe in todays educational world it is paramount for districts to have a department that is providing one on one coaching to teachers, providing resources, and doing the research to find the best digital tools for the students/teachers needs. Humanising the digital learning space is pivotal when implementing digital technologies. In my experience in the heutogogical learning space, adult students are not always techno-savvy, and they require someone with patience and an undying will to go the extra mile to assist them. We have the know-how and invest all time and effort in introducing educational technologies, but if we lack the human element to bring our students on board, we are as good as a dysfunctional system whose useful resources become useless as they wound up not serving the purpose due to rejection. People will not accept things they cannot use nor bear an understanding of their utility if they are expected to function like robots.

Rather than being a separate added lesson think carefully about how technology can be added into unit programs. Choose what you can to enhance the learning. But also learn what students already know so you can build on their skills - don’t assume knowledge. When asked how I inserted comments into a student’s first draft as feedback, I realised that while students are adept at the latest apps they don’t know the full use of word programs. So, never assume that students are ‘digital natives’. We often know practical uses that they don’t know.
