Are all accepted and respected? o Have you evaluated all options? Sometimes, following a good filtering works. - If nothing else works, try to reach a win-win and that may resolve the conflict.

A project manager sets a target date for the go-live of the project fully realising that there are risks to the go-live date. The project team members believe it is an up-hill task. If the manager shares his risk assessment transparently the project anyway wouldn’t go live. He needs to share things only on need basis and ensure together they address the risks and overcome the problems. Sometimes a few judgements are self fulfilling. In these circumstances one cannot be fully transparent but share information only on need basis in the greater interest of the project. This is true for other fields too.

Once this is done then stack rank each one categorically, then I’ll send everyone away with their own list for a day or so and then come back together to create a single list. If more than one item is deemed of equal importance by the groups, leave it. The goal is to get them to communicate as a group with a unified voice. Complete the list and garner agreement. From my experience, this is even more critical when you have teams that are spread across geographies and time zones. This includes mapping out key people involved, who needs to be contacted for what and what would be our accepted channel of communication. As leaders we need to ensure that the teams understand this and can collaborate effectively so that communication flows to the people that matter. While one hopes that all of this works well, it is import at to set up an internal escalation path so that leaders can step in if the team encounters a bottleneck or conflicting requirement.

Conflict is bound to arise due to personal differences, however, set a clear conflict resolution strategy. Manage a robust environment for easy communication among team members. The primary role and purpose of leadership teams is to design and align goals cohesively across the organization. Failure in this area often leads to misalignment, which is a fundamental cause of conflict. When I observe ambiguity in roles and responsibilities or consistent conflict within teams, I recommend resisting the temptation to design processes and norms until the issues within leadership are fully addressed.

It’s important to understand individuals learning styles and behaviors when seeking consensus. I’ve found working through various assessment tools as part of team building can help this enormously. Some people are just better at consensus and some actually feel like dissenting is part of their role. Understanding this and encoraging each player results in a better outcome.

Prioritize Collective Interests: Focus on the team’s goals, even if it means compromising on features or timelines. 3. Achieve Practical Consensus: Aim for a general agreement on the best path forward, not unanimous approval on every detail.

After we reach a consensus, it's crucial for us to implement the agreed-upon solutions promptly. In our enterprise software team, this might involve adjusting project plans, reallocating resources, or revising timelines. By taking decisive action, we not only resolve the conflict but also reinforce the effectiveness of our conflict resolution process. This approach helps build trust and confidence within our team, ensuring we're prepared to tackle future challenges effectively.

Regardless of the fact that discussing conflict resolution between two human beings, is cited in the metaphorical context of a software dev. life cycle, it's important that whatever is discussed to ensure there is resolution, is followed through with. It's that simple. Discussing the issue at full, with all of the facts, and context, while then agreeing to a plan that both individuals or groups are satisfied with is a proper way for resolution. Talking about it only, and then not following through leads to mistrust, counterfeit behaviors and commitments, and will further a culture of deception and toxicity.

I think that not enough time is spent in creating a culture that allows for collaboration, creating a safe space to have a point of view. Organization are often locked into a hierarchical decision making style whereas processes like Agile require a servant style of leadership. I also believe that not enough investment is made in subject matter expertise that is available to development teams. I believe that both of these areas require investment of time, resources and time for people to meet and bond.

Teams building enterprise software are generally experienced professionals - if not, you have other problems. Focusing on goals is good, but often it's a differences in understanding the goals that's the root of a disagreement. I would start by making sure that everyone has a similar understanding of the goals. After goals, you get to the methods for achieving the goals, and while there will be disagreements on methods or strategy, these are generally easier to come to a consensus on once you all agree on the goals. This assumes that people are motivated by having a successful project and not on other goals like building more influence for their department/role/office. Again, if this is the case you have different problems.

There is a quote from Gary Vaynerchuk that sums up how culture can be designed to succeed effectively or just look good from the outside in. The quote goes, “You don't build culture by offering free snacks or a gym membership or open seating. You build culture by talking to people, and understanding what they care about.” So communication designed on trust, openness, transparency, authenticity and removing the blaming/shaming will go a long way to understanding each other while shaping the company culture.
