I am a researcher and have developed skills to find information in libraries, on-line and in person. If you have those skills the self paced study is very rewarding. I am also a licensed geoscientist and am required to have continued education. Self paced studies are approved by the Texas Board of Professional Geoscientists (TBPG). I also am a member of International Association for Promoting Geoethics (IAPG) and keep my Professional Ethics requirements for training with their programs. Other self-paced studies are through reading books, articles and occasional lectures attended. I was trained as a scientist and became successful. I needed more business skills and earned an MBA through an Executive Program at the University of Texas at Dallas. Interacting with all of the students worked to develop needed skills and knowledge while expanding my connections. We traveled to Japan and China interacting with several businesses and leaders that had interests in Dallas and Texas. We studied why our local Mary Kay Cosmetics company was not having the success envisioned in Japan but were very successful in China. We lobbied Toyota to locate a Truck plant in Texas successfully. We had many new contacts and success along with excellent learning with hands on projects. Our teams continued to build solid business relationships.

I'm a sucker for professional development. This comes in varying forms and more importantly can be both in person or virtual/online neither way participate fully, network and make the most of your time during the professional development exercise. You could form lasting relationships which spans beyond the professional development programs. It gives you the avenue to learn from. A mix of talents and pools of expertise which clshoukd home your skills. And more importantly share what you learn with others. This for me is the more rewarding aspect of professional development

This not only helps you advance in your career but also shows your employer your dedication to making a positive impact on the company and the community.

I joined the Dallas Geological Society as a student and followed throughout my professional career. We had technical talks, luncheons, dinners and social events. I had great interactions with all levels of career professionals. I was entrepreneurial and became an international business person. I developed additional business and trade relationships with the City of Dallas and took part in trade missions to increase trade with Mexico under Mayor Annette Strauss. We helped in matchmaking and translation plus we had offices in Monterrey and Mexico City. Then in environmental consultancy and worked on the behalf of FDIC to clean up and sell failed bank assets. General Electric Capital Corporation was buying similar assets. I also earned an MBA
