It's important to keep all data in one place organized in files. Make sure you have protections on the Electronic Health Records (EHR) and that the EHR is HIPAA compliant. These protections not only protect the client but also the case manager from data breaches and improve confidentiality of the client and their information.

In my experience it’s not only understanding the laws but also putting them into practice, being aware of HIPPA and confidentiality practices. For example, if meeting with a client, making sure to close out any information on the computer about another patient/client. Being mindful of voice volume and not disclosing any topics such as, “ let’s discuss your diet”, in front of others. This can make the client very uncomfortable. Maintaining the honor and integrity of that person.

Making ones self knowledgeable of such information reduces the probability of private information being shared or destroyed incorrectly. Knowledge is power.
