Can we be honest for a minute? Safety plans are designed as barriers against liability far more than they are tools for safety implementation. I am not saying they shouldn’t protect employers and clients, but the first people they protect should be the ones swinging the hammers. If your company is committed to safety, train your employees on the content of your corporate safety plan, site specific safety plan, and daily safety plans. If those performing the work don’t know what’s in the plans, you can’t expect them to adhere to your expectations. Finally, safety information needs to be in the language of those who need the information to be safe. If you want buy in, translate your safety plans so your crews can read it for themselves.

I agree completely. I have learnt that talking and speaking in the contractor's language, helps them understand what is expected of them. I do not like it when someone stares at me with a deer in headlights. I keep the lingo simple by not talking in acronyms. Also, whenever there is a new safety policy being implemented, I make sure I spread the word verbally, e-mails, and text messages and allowing people to ask questions.

Really like the comment. I myself being a Forman do know where you’re going with this. I find companies do what they need to do to be within the legal conformity of heath and safety. But yet most of the people on those committees never leave the office and don’t fully understand what the work is like in the field. I try and do speak to my guys like they are adults and do all I can to help them understand that yes some of the PPE and or site rules can be cumbersome and annoying. But they are all in place for their safety and protection. The easiest way I find to help them understand and conform is to always do my best to follow the same rules and procedures that are set out for all of us. Even if it takes a bit of positive reinforcement.

Continuously provide training opportunities to keep safety knowledge up-to-date. Regularly test workers' safety knowledge through oversight and spot checks. Set up mentorship programs to help new workers learn safety protocol.

Provide mandatory safety training for all workers before they start on the site. Cover topics like hazard recognition, safe equipment operation, and emergency procedures.Offer continuous training sessions to keep workers updated on new safety practices and technologies. Include refresher courses and specialized training for specific tasks or equipment. Ensure all workers have access to appropriate PPE, such as helmets, gloves, safety glasses, and high-visibility clothing. Regularly inspect PPE for damage and replace it as necessary. Provide well-maintained tools and equipment. Conduct regular maintenance checks and replace or repair any faulty equipment promptly.

All workers she be properly trained on any machinery or any task they are required to work on. Training should be preform frequently or whenever there’s any change in job task. Taking pride in training gives the company and employees confidence to preform and task work.

I respectively disagree with the first comment. PPE is not the first line of defense. It is the last stand against injury after the actual controls have failed. Elimination, substitution, engineering, and administration create a distance between the hazard and your employee. PPE is for the moment the hazard and the employee share the same space. But when it is needed, it must be right. Remember, PPE is not universal. As an employer you must provide PPE based on a risk evaluation and the needs of the employee. Not all glasses fit workers the same. The same is true for hard hats, hearing protection, gloves, harnesses, etc. Finally, PPE requires training. If they need it, you must train them how to select, use, maintain, and store it.

Ppe is literally first line of defense when on jobs site being that majority of all jobs site accidents are preventable but when they occur and with the proper Ppe it can almost guarantee that you can go home same way you came to work.

It is rare for a company to have a truly accurate vision of their construction sites. Reporting is at the core of this issue. Why? Because the workers and the foremen do not trust you. They have all listened to the “report everything” speeches, stood in toolbox talk circles, and sat through orientations where they were assured there would not be consequences for reporting. Then, they have watched their coworkers get fired, their foremen lose money, and they have learned not to say anything. Reporting requires trust and is an uphill battle. If you want reports, be clear in your message, kind when receiving a report, and conspicuous in your gratitude. Workers are not stupid and manipulation won’t help your company’s perception of the site.

You have to believe in the workers struggles, their efforts in making ends meet... this extra effort from your side reduces lot of unseen dangers at construction site. All of the above categories are great, but none of them mean much without proper funding. Like it or not, safety has an upfront cost and requires investment long before a shovel reaches the ground. Companies who want their employees safe on a construction site need to perform thorough risk breakdowns, safety implementation sequencing, and detailed cost analyses to ensure bids will meet the needs well before the work begins. Not all superintendents are made in the image of the “safety guy” upstairs. If a company wants their workers safe, they need to select and train site leaders who see the value of the people performing the work and that usually comes with a price.
