In my experience, one of the critical challenges in product innovation is keeping a project on track despite the lure of adding more features. Early in my career, I led a project intended to introduce a new software tool. As development progressed, the feature list began to expand as stakeholders suggested more and more "essential" additions. This could have severely delayed our launch. To manage this, we rigorously defined the project's scope at the start, documenting clear objectives and deliverables. Each time a new feature was proposed, we revisited this document and asked whether it was crucial to the project's core goals or could be scheduled for a later update.

Scope creep often results from Executives looking to distract or mitigate for one issue by over-commiting on another. Just because a CXO is the superior of VP Product or Director of Product Management does not mean that they can routinely over-rule them. This will make scope creep 'a feature' as the customer will expect that they can always manipulate scope by bringing up an unrelated gripe. Product Management need to be allowed to manage products or over-commitment will result in under-delivery and a loss of trust.

Ideally when scope creep occurs the first step is clarifying with all stakeholders that this is a new and out of scope task. The second step should be communicating the impact in both TIME and PRICE. There are times when minor scope creep may have minimal impact on deadlines and the commercial terms but communicating it is still a best practice I would encourage to make sure all stakeholders understand that changes have occurred.
