Here's how you can polish your public speaking skills as an executive.

Being a certified LinkedIn Profile Expert in my previous roles, one of the key things that helped me win audience attention was to know who the audience were. Often knowing your audience, their common traits, personas helps one to tweak their speech, talk track in unique ways to keep them engaged. One of the hacks that have worked for me is to have fun ice breakers keeping in mind audience in the room to get the participation levels up!

Less is More and thats how your audience will remember you. Imagine a movie that you love, you won't ever remember the full version with dialogues but often remember few punchy dialogues that will make its mark in your mind. Similarly, craft your message to create a spark in your audience's mind. Few ways to add to this would be : 1) Drama is good so ensure you build up your story 2) Your Tone and Delivery of the Story pretty much nails what the audience would remember 3) Your message if short and crisp will hit harder than long sentences and without pauses.

Have a mission on your message! When you are passionate about something, it will show and create a bond through your passion! An ounce of passion beats a pound of polish!

Know your subject so well you can be interrupted, (it will happen) and you just keep rolling. I once had the lights go out and 15 seconds into the blackout I started to deliver without powerpoint or sound system. I used my phone flashlight to illuminate me as I stood at the podium without notes and crushed it.

Public Speaking and Practicing goes hand and hand. In your first initial ones, you're bound to be jittery but once you focus on the rhythm of your narrative, speak in closed room with just yourself keeping a close check on eye movements, hand movements and sometimes even the pauses that you take- it goes a long way to add to the finesse for public speaking. One of the hacks that worked for me was recording myself speak over self created zoom meetings and then reviewing them!

Record yourself daily speaking into your camera. (Talk straight for at least 3 minutes on a topic you're a subject matter expert on.) Get the reps in to practice/notice: ? Facial expressions ? Voice intonation ? Hand/body gestures ? Tempo of speaking ? Use of filler or non-words Now go back a watch the video without sound (volume down) to simply notice your facial expressions and body language. Watch it a second time with audio only (place the phone face down) to notice tone and speed of your voice. Then go and transcribe the video and notice all the filler and non-words used. Just how athletes watch "game film" of their performances, this is game film for your public speaking. Now get after it!

Albert Mehrabian, a researcher of body language, found that communication is 55% nonverbal, 38% vocal, and 7% words only. So mastering non-verbal cues is very important! Body language covers posture, stance, arms, hand gestures, facial gestures, eye contact, general movement and any fidgeting. All body language is telling the audience something. Is it the message that you want to give? Great practice method is to record yourself speaking as if you were up in front of an audience. Then play the video back with no sound. Just watch yourself, watch your body and all your movement. It's somewhat awkward, but is quick to highlight if you have any nervous gestures or misleading movements.

Consider beginning with a story from your personal experience. Executives are commonly unrelatable until they are not! Stories can add personality and vulnerability to the iron shell of a C-Suite exec. The audience will root for you when you are transparent! You don't have to know it all to relate to people who are on your side!!!

I always say that the most important thing in public speaking is not necessarily to know your audience but to know your goal: what is it that you are trying to achieve? What is your expected/desired outcome? If you keep that in mind then you won't go wrong. A great way to polish your skills is to simply practice at every opportunity. Make every moment a 'public speaking opportunity'. Give yourself a intense period of practice and fill every moment up with repetition and practice.
