One thing that I found helpful when teaching is how to learn. It is always easy to demonstrate a skill, but how do you truly learn, break it down, and ensure that a skill is thoroughly learned and understood. Even to yourself? Ask yourself questions that seem silly, but someone who is brand new to the skill would have. Teacher yourself a skill as if you’ve never learned it before.

Evaluate your skills honestly before transitioning to academia. Teaching demands unique abilities, such as clear communication, patience, and simplifying complex concepts. If you lack educational experience, consider workshops or courses in teaching methodologies. This self-assessment identifies areas for growth and professional development, enhancing your effectiveness as an educator. For a graphic UI/UX designer, understanding these demands ensures you can translate design expertise into valuable, engaging lessons, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of design principles among students.

Enhance your resume by gaining teaching experience through workshops, guest lectures, or mentorship programs. Contact local design schools or community colleges to volunteer. This builds your teaching portfolio and provides practical classroom experience. Networking with faculty offers insights into academic environments, benefiting your future in education. An example of ways to gain experience can also include tutoring/private tutoring. It allows you ways to track individual student progress and it gives you insight on how different students learn and how to overcome hurdles when students are stuck. These are things I was asked about in my interview.
