By comparing actual data to benchmarks or standards, areas of underperformance can be highlighted. Bottlenecks in business processes can easily be identified at the changeover from one individual to another, or department to another. This is where you can identify what is going wrong and what is going right. Is it the time it takes to get to this point, hence causing delays? Is it the quality of the output creating issues with the input of another process?
