Here's how you can overcome a job interview rejection and move forward.

The sting of rejection is real and something too many are experiencing. I think recognizing the sheer number of people you are competing with for every job can help to level set your expectations. Also, if you are solely applying to online posts via this platform you need to know statistically your chances of being rejected are close to 99%. Accepting you are in a once in a lifetime job market and so many others are experiencing the same constant barrage of rejection can bring some "relief" for a lack of a better word. I'm going to give some tough love here... If you were rejected for a job interview-- move on. That is obviously not the right company for you. Sure, you may have been a perfect fit for the role- but you might be dealing with an inexperienced recruiter that just doesn't understand. This is one of the hardest things to understand, especially in the job search. Each rejection should make you take a look at your personal brand. Who are you as in industry leader? Why did they not see it? What can you add or build out to ensure someone knows exactly what you can offer. Remember, humans are not mind readers. While you may be a perfect fit- does your experience and skillset come out? Are you what that company needs today and in the future?

If it's subject matter or experience where you fell short than I agree with this - if it's subjective I completely disagree with this statement. You should reflect before the interview and that reflection should be: why would I not hire myself for this job. Another way to think about reflection on your interview is: what are the same questions I keep hearing. For example, you're an Accountant interviewing for an Accounting Manager and every interviewer asks you about how many people you've managed. And you haven't managed any - there's your objection.

Not all companies will provide feedback but whenever possible, ask for that feedback. Even if you don't 100% agree with the feedback, reflect on the interview experience to assess if there are small changes you can make to improve. In addition to asking companies for feedback it can also be helpful to seek feedback from mentors, friends, colleagues, and others in your network to help your brainstorm and refine answers to common interview questions and situations.

A transparent and fair approach on both sides means that everyone involved can take away what is important for them from the situation. Transparency, communication at eye level and fairness are the western components.

Approach feedback with a learner’s mindset. When I first started asking for feedback, I was surprised by how many employers appreciated it. Their insights often highlighted areas I hadn’t considered, like the importance of demonstrating enthusiasm for the company’s mission. This reflection often leads to small but impactful tweaks, like emphasizing certain skills or adding recent projects, which align better with the job requirements.

Every seen an Attorney questioning someone? I have and it was in a case that meant a great deal to me. My Attorney was a friend and I'd never seen him in action professionally. Staying positive is so important when it comes to job searching. I genuinely believe that part of it is just luck - being interviewed by the right person on the right day for example. If you don't get the job - often it is not personal, and often it is not a reflection on you. You might have been a great candidate who might have got it on another day, but they spoke to else who had slightly more relevant experience. You can't let that defeat you. It's tricky, but you have to keep persevering and staying positive. If you lose that positive mindset, you won't present yourself as well and may lose out on other opportunities.
