In my years of trade show experience, don’t sit down on your stand unless you invite people to discuss more with you. Try and give everyone a handout, even if they don’t engage or make eye contact. They could be shy, gathering information, prices or there on behalf of someone else. I’ve always been surprised at the leads I thought would be sure and those I had not even talked to, come back to me. Try and make people smile but cut to the chase or move on, don’t miss potential good leads through chatting to nice people. Don’t be on your phone or look bored. Stand openly and maybe have a screen on your stand showcasing your products/skills and services on a loop. Maybe do a comp to get emails and use for contacts list to follow up

Trade shows can be very benefical if handled properly. The booth should be inviting with as much open space for customers to enter. NO CHAIRS! Sitting down gives the customer the impression that you don't care about them or even care to be there. Stay within your booth. Hanging in the aisle soliciting customers is annoying and a complete turnoff. This is a time to build relationships. Approach it like you would approach a date. Are you looking for a one night stand or a meaningful relationship?

If you don't have one already, create a Lead Form that captures valuable contact information such as a phone number and email—we collect additional information as it pertains to our business; but some people don't always carry business cards and presenting them with a short form can be helpful in lead-capturing later on. These have not only been helpful to us during trade show events, but golf outing sponsorships as well. After the show, comb through your lead forms and mark a date for follow-ups, and make those calls.
