Counsellors use this approach to help people navigate and process ideas and emotions. It is equally applicable in moments when we seek to learn what has motivated and inspired someone’s participation in the profession. I can’t think of a better way to establish authentic interest in new relationships than leading with curiosity. Curiosity is what we nurture in our students. It’s a good for us as well.

Start by connecting with colleagues and peers in a genuine way. Show interest in their work and share your experiences. Attend workshops and conferences, and don't hesitate to start conversations. Think of it as making new friends—be friendly, approachable, and open to learning from others.

Join professional groups on platforms like LinkedIn and participate in discussions. Share your insights, certificates, points from FDPs, achievements, and useful resources. It’s like having a digital resume that’s always visible to potential connections. Stay active and engage with posts to keep yourself on their radar.

My entire life in education changed with my connection to colleagues online. It was most important, however, to seek out those who would engage in reciprocal connections. The “teachers of Instagram” folks who overly-curate a flawless presence leave me with many questions. Those who share their best days alongside their days of struggle are giving you an authentic representation of how they seek to engage online…and it sure is easier to connect with those colleagues!! They’ll share and you will want to share with them.

Offer your skills and expertise for school events, community projects, or professional organizations. This not only showcases your dedication but also opens doors to meeting new people. Think of it as giving back while also gaining valuable contacts and experiences.
