There is no substitute to knowing the scientific principles in which your art rests. When the Pope visited Costa Rica in 1983, he was to speak on "La Sabana" a former airport turned park with a 1Km long open field. Think a quarter of a million people, on foot. Pierre Baldie, the head Sound Engineer, set up 10 m towers every 100 m with speakers and digital delays tuned to the distance. When the Pope spoke, the delay lines made sure we did not hear his words until the LAST tower had the proper delay and then ALL the towers would come in at the SAME time, not even that loud, but clear as crystal. The sound was effectively late by 3 seconds for all present, except the radio and TV feeds, that got it in "real time" from the monitor feeds.

Consider your ENTIRE audience and their needs. Be sure your/the venue’s system works with independent assistive listening devices. Insist the venue provide assistive listening devices to borrow, as different spaces mean different levels of ability to hear. Have a large screen with live captioning at the event. Insist the venue hire an ASL interpreter, either virtual or in person for those who benefit from one. Ensure you have amplification available for audience members to ask questions, and that those sources can move around the room. If you are speaking at a venue with multiple rooms, run a sound check and test it when others are speaking in adjoining rooms to check for sound bleed and/or mic cross over.
