It is always said. Right fit for the right work. Right fit does not only relate to the technical skills we have. It extends to the interpersonal skills and the impact that one can create with such interpersonal skills. Technical skill is something which anyone can learn sooner or later with time. But interpersonal skill is not easy going. It needs patience, empathy, active listening and many such traits that keeps the team at work engaged without any friction. This creates a great impact too. This also helps in lowering down attrition rate for an organization, which might be a costly affair where employees turnover is high. And for maintaining such a team, one should be definitely rewarded.

Knowing your worth is crucial when negotiating a raise in a creator team. The most effective method, in my experience, is to know and document your value to the team, highlighting specific projects, tasks, or contributions that have significantly benefited the project or organization. The more data the better. The second thing I’ve found important is to be realistic, which starts with understanding, on some level, the performance of the team, the finances, and being able to apply a specific value to your contributions and show how they have directly played a role in the team seeing an uptick in revenue.

Timing is everything here. Understand the process and at what time of year compensation is reviewed. Ask prior to this time when it is in mind for management. Present examples of your contribution to the business and the team and culture. Show ongoing commitment and anchor the conversation to being sure you are being rewarded fairly (nothing more and nothing less).

Financial matters are more critical than Health matters. You know why ? A good financial health will always keep you in good mental health. It is always good to know your worth and get paid accordingly. But how ? Easy said than done, but you have to achieve a milestone which others have not expected of you. In such a competitive environment where everyone has his own milestone set, you must be aware about yours. The milestone is not only your personal growth as it has to be aligned with your organization's goals and objectives. This combined milestone will create an impact worth asking for a raise. The contribution must be showcased at the time of discussing financial matters and must be done when the environment is conducive enough.

Two important things 1. You know what are you asking for and what you are going to serve on the table. If you are sure on this, be patient and stick to your stance, you will win the game. 2. I happened to read a real story somewhere on social media that an employee wanted to switch for salary hike. He negotiated with his new employer for a 30% hike from his current CTC. On accepting the offer letter, he decide to resign from his current employer. But before he could do this, he got a hike of 24% in annual appraisal cycle. Now that he had a new offer where he thought his actual worth was of 30%, the 24% hike in current employment bothered him. In absolute terms he has earned only 6% increment for himself. Had he asked for 40% from the new employer, hopefully he would have got it. From this story, we can see that we fail to value ourself at time required and end up accepting offers less than our worth.

How to negotiate a raise is an interesting question. One thing to consider is why do you want or need a raise? How can you get this across in a compelling story? (Note that you have to believe it yourself otherwise it’s unlikely to be compelling). It’s not a guarantee of success - any more than any of the other suggestions in this article - but having a compelling story does set an important context for any price discussion and negotiation.
