Never hesitate to ask questions during your internship. Curiosity is a hallmark of a great engineer, and seeking clarification on tasks or concepts is vital for your learning process. Remember, it's better to ask a question and get it right than to proceed with uncertainty and make a costly mistake. Your supervisors expect you to be inquisitive and will appreciate your eagerness to understand and learn.

Asking questions is also a way to be more efficient. Do not spend hours doing a Google search and getting “no where” when a simple question to a more experienced person could save so much time. You supervisor knows that you do not know everything so don’t not be shy about asking questions or feel self conscious/concerned that you will somehow show your boss that you are not an expert at something. Although try to have a solution to the problem in mind before asking the question. Don’t just use your supervisors as another form of Google.

Interns need to learn to anticipate when they will finish an assignment and ask for the next one before they finish the current one. A supervisor can become frustrated when someone drops in and says I am out of work and need something to do right now. This takes the supervisor away from their work and makes them scramble to organize the next thing for them. This skill is not only applicable to interns but to young engineers as well.

Here are 3 important things our summer intern realized during his stay with us: 1) The first ‘sick day’ wasn’t well received. His learning was working through assignments online from home when he got hurt. 2) How he did Excel, AutoCAD was more the lesson than what he did - Halfway through an assignment he was given, he realized actually learning the software was as valuable as what he was creating with it - This set him up for a life of success. 3) Going the extra mile meant everything - It clicked when we asked to create an online article about a client, and when he checked in, he did the whole list - This is the key to success. Taking the initiative to learn ‘behind the curtains’ & always do more than asked are the takeaways.
