In My opinion, whenever you are working on a project, the first thing you have to know is the Job properly (What you want to achieve). You should also be prepared that your project is going to fail (80% to not getting a satisfactory result) if your attempt is first in that area. There are various tools you can use to simulate before going into the lab and this will decrease your chance of failure.
